Goshen College graduate Karen Zorn visited her alma mater Monday, Jan. 12, to deliver a keynote speech discussing the merits of a new music program called El Sistema. The program is spreading into Elkhart classrooms and across the U.S.
Goshen News editors see progress in fostering a dialogue that, despite some palpable tension, will help diverse groups of people better understand their points of view.
For the second time in three years, a Goshen College student took first place in the bi-national intercollegiate C. Henry Smith Oratorical Contest sponsored by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. Abby Deaton, a senior communication major from Indianapolis, won with her speech, “The Welcome Table: Discussing Goshen College’s Hiring Policy.”
Fourteen Goshen College students are participating in the Maple Scholars Summer Research Program. Started in 1998, Maple Scholars is an eight-week program of research, experimentation, analysis and archiving data.
Modeled after the popular photo blog Humans of New York, Humans of Goshen is a peace-building photography project that acts as a platform for community storytelling. Sara Klassen, a 2014 Goshen College graduate, pioneered the project to highlight diversity in Goshen’s population.
Sara Klassen’s final class at Goshen College didn’t take place in the Florida Keys or the African savannah or among Roman ruins, where many of her friends were studying during May Term. Her final class took place in a windowless room deep in the Elkhart County jail.
Twenty-two Goshen College students are spending their summer working with professors on various research projects during the college’s eight-week Maple Scholars program.
David Cortright, director of policy studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, will present the annual Goshen College Yoder Public Affairs Lecture, titled “The Power of Nonviolence: Lessons from the Unarmed Revolution in Egypt,” on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center’s Rieth Recital Hall.
