I am a farmer. A Christian farmer. A low-input, sustainable, Christian farmer. I believe that our work is to create the new Eden—an Eden that is interdependent and sustainable in ways that the most radical hippies and permaculturists never imagined. And I believe I am being called to this vocation, to these beliefs.
Dr. Gingerich, who is one of the world's leading astronomers and has an astroid named in his honor, delivered the opening address for a panel of scientists who discussed the impact of human activities on the earth. "We are at a perilous point where our knowledge, our powers and our masses have the newly acquired capability to irredeemably destroy our environment," Gingerich stated.
As youth come through DOOR Atlanta this summer, they’ll find something on their plates that you wouldn’t expect on a weeklong service trip: local, organic food. Tim Showalter Ehst, the interim co-director of DOOR (Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection) in Atlanta and a Goshen (Ind.) Angie (Miller) Bastian ’83 and her husband, Dan, a former teacher, have built their former garage business into Angie’s Kettle Corn, a multi-million company rooted in the values of family, treating people fairly and giving back to the community. They sell their snack food in 50 states through such retailers as Costco, Martin’s, Target and Whole Foods.
When I was growing up, an annual winter tradition for the Rohrer family was driving from eastern Ohio to Goshen to visit “the cousins” – those in the family enrolled at Goshen College. From an early age, these family trips imprinted on me that Goshen was family.
Goshen College music alumnae Leslee Smucker '09, violin, and Anna Showalter '10, piano, will return to campus to present a music recital in Rieth Recital Hall.
Four years ago, Heather Zimmerman came to Goshen College from Guam to study American Sign Language. Now, she has graduated and is taking her passion for ASL to give back to the country from which she came.
