Institute for Indonesian Academic Partnerships

The Institute for Indonesian Academic Partnerships (IIAP) is a Goshen College program established to provide an avenue for North American and Indonesian universities and non-profits to develop mutually beneficial educational and community service partnerships. IIAP members share a commitment to promoting peace, justice, and equity through education. The Institute promotes collaborative efforts working toward sustainable livelihoods and flourishing communities through deep and reciprocal partnerships.

IIAP members educates future generations in the issues of peace and justice with a commitment to God’s creation and building resilience in local communities. By combining the multifaceted educational programs of member institutions with the expertise of partners working in community-based development and project management, members can enhance student learning and faculty development while building the capacity of members to serve the vulnerable and marginalized. The overarching purpose is to make a tangible impact on North American and Indonesian communities by working alongside students and faculty to empower current and future community leaders to build resilient communities and build deeper relationships.

The avenues for collaboration include but are not limited to:

  1. Cross-cultural learning
  2. Indonesian and English language-learning
  3. Course offerings in Indonesia and North America for exchanges both ways
  4. Academic exchanges, consultations and collaborative projects on topics including:
  5. Peace and reconciliation
  6. Interfaith dialogue and cooperation
  7. Environmental sustainability and ecological restoration
  8. Community health and development
  9. Social entrepreneurship
  10. Formats for partnership may include:
  11. Guest lecture in a class or a conference (remote or in-person)
  12. Joint research and publication project (hybrid, in-person and remote)
  13. Teaching a class (remote or in-person)
  14. Sabbatical projects
  15. Joint work on a community development project
  16. Visiting scholars’ program

IIAP Goals

The IIAP’s aim is to increase the educational capacity of institute members to educate future generations of students for global citizenship with a deeper understanding of peace, a commitment to community service, and building flourishing communities grounded in the principles of justice and equity.

The format of a partnership may include:

IIAP Member Benefits

Membership entitles institutions to:

  1. Access to a knowledgeable team in Indonesia who can provide context, advice, and
  2. be a liaison with North American and Indonesian members.
  3. Assistance in project design between members and partners.
  4. Student/cultural exchange support for programs in Indonesia.
  5. Facilitation and negotiation of partnerships/programs with North American and Indonesian educational members for the development of mutually beneficial partnerships.
  6. Relationship management and administrative oversight of agreed upon partnerships/projects with educational members.
  7. Invitation to participate in the Institute’s related seminars and training.
  8. Being part of an Anabaptist and Indonesian educational network that collaborates on partnerships in North America and Indonesia.

Work with us

Institutions may apply for affiliation by sending a signed agreement to the Institute Director.

  • Member institutions provide a primary contact person to convey information from the Institute about potential partnerships to relevant faculty and students in their organization.
  • Membership is currently free of charge and there is not an obligation, financial or otherwise, to enter into partnership with institute members.
  • Membership is open to accredited North American and Indonesian higher education and non-profit organizations
