Why Study Journalism at Goshen College?

Write the story, then watch it reach an audience while you are still a student.

The journalism major at Goshen College is a degree in writing, research and storytelling. You report for campus media from your first year.

You will learn from experienced faculty who are active media professionals, and you will put your skills into action right away through campus publications and media outlets. With an emphasis on storytelling, social responsibility and hands-on learning, the program prepares you to become an ethical, informed communicator. You will cover real stories that matter, from breaking news to the voices of your own community.

  • 100+
years of campus newspaper journalism through The Record
  • 3
student newsrooms you can join in your first year: The Record, The Globe and 91.1 FM
  • Top 3
The Record has placed in Indiana's top three for Newspaper of the Year six years running (ICPA, college division)

A Place to Land, Not Just a Program

Goshen College is a small, values-centered community where you build a circle quickly, through the newsroom at The Record, the campus radio station 91.1 The Globe and the wider work of the communication department. You start working in student media in your first year, so you belong here before you have declared a major.

Journalism here rewards curiosity across subjects. If you are drawn to the sciences and the arts as much as to reporting, a Bachelor of Arts in a liberal arts setting lets you carry that breadth into your writing rather than setting it aside. You write about the world by studying the world.

    What You’ll Study

The journalism major builds foundational skills in writing, editing and reporting. You start with the craft of clear, accurate writing, then move into research and multimedia storytelling that carries across print, audio and online formats.

Coursework pairs with real publishing from the start. You are encouraged to take part in student-led media, and to pursue co-curricular experiences that build a portfolio you can show an editor or a graduate program when you finish. View the complete program requirements in our catalog.

    Where You’ll Practice

    • The Record

Strengthen your writing and reporting at Goshen College’s weekly student newspaper, where your work reaches a real campus audience.

    • 91.1 The Globe

Step into the spotlight at the Best College Radio Station in the Nation, where you host shows, report live, and manage programming from your first year.

    • Squirrel Digest

Write for Squirrel Digest, the independent student-run arts magazine, highlighting student and alumni stories through feature writing, short stories, poetry, photography, and other forms of art.

      • Because I worked on GC Journal (the campus news program at the time), I left GC knowing all the facets of TV production, so I was able to take whatever job I could get, just to get my foot in the door.
