Goshen College was less than halfway into a $3 million U.S. Department of Education grant in 2025 when President Donald Trump introduced a series of changes both swift and sweeping. Goshen had been awarded a competitive Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions grant in 2023 to support student success, based in part on more than 25% of the college’s student body identifying as Hispanic/Latinx. Goshen made plans to use $600,000 per year over five years to renovate its library and hire staff for Academic Success Center expansion. “Approaching the end of year two, all of this chatter started about defunding grants to minority-serving institutions,” said Goshen President Rebecca Stoltzfus.

GOSHEN, Ind. (WSBT) — Goshen College is expanding the healthcare options available to students. The college says changes in insurance coverage, cost and transportation have created barriers for some students trying to get care. Now, it is adding new local partnerships and virtual options to make those services easier to access. The college says its student population comes from a variety of backgrounds, and that means students do not all have the same access to healthcare. Some may be navigating insurance on their own for the first time, while others may not have coverage at all. Goshen College Director of Health and Wellness Patty Hartshorn said, "We want to make sure that no matter what choice the student makes, that we can provide equitable care. And the best way that we can do that is partnership with our community resources."

Goshen College is a small liberal arts college in northern Indiana, 1,500 miles from the Florida Keys. In spite of its small size and location, the college for years has embraced a marine biology program, even though its closest body of water is the Elkhart River, home to smallmouth bass and channel catfish. For years, Goshen has run a marine biology station for students in Layton. Professor Phil Allman serves as teacher, administrator and champion for the program.
