You will host shows, report live and build a portfolio from your first semester, not your junior year.
A communications major at Goshen College prepares you for careers in journalism, broadcasting, film, public relations and digital media. You take classes across journalism, public relations, radio and television broadcasting, writing, multimedia and film studies.
You jump into hands-on work right away, the kind students at larger schools often wait years to reach. Courses are interdisciplinary and built around real production, so you learn the equipment by using it, and you graduate with published work, real shows and at least one internship on your résumé.
A place that learns your name
Small classes means professors know you by name. Since 2020, the Center for Communication Studies has held the award-winning television, radio, and print programs under one roof, so get to you work alongside the same team every day, with Globe announcers on the air and student staff in a busy newsroom.
Students arrive in Goshen from across the country and around the world, and the community welcomes you whatever your background, religious or not, domestic or international. You do not need to know media when you arrive. Here, you quickly find people who will walk alongside you as you learn and grow.
What you’ll study
The curriculum is built with working professionals, so you learn current tools in visual communication and electronic media. Move between journalism, public relations, radio and television broadcasting, writing, multimedia and film studies, and develop leadership running programming at 91.1 The Globe or in The Record’s newsroom.
You complete at least one off-campus internship and are encouraged to do more. In addition, you can take part in the Study-Service Term, Goshen’s signature program connecting global learning, cultural immersion and service. View the complete program requirements in our catalog.

“While I was a communication student at GC, I served as executive editor of The Record, completed more than 100 hours of sporting event broadcasts, and even helped to bring back the yearbook on campus — just to name a few things. All of this was only possible because of my incredible professors who took someone who came into college firmly believing that she was only good at fiction writing and transformed her into someone who is now working full time as a communication professional immediately after graduation. The diverse mix of classroom instruction and the many types of hands-on learning helped me to grow both as a communicator and as a person. I use skills I learned at GC every single day — at work and in life.

Graduates work in broadcasting, journalism, film, public relations and digital media, in roles such as news anchor, reporter, producer, video editor, audio engineer, public relations specialist, station manager and marketing manager. Recent students have interned at ABC 57, WNDU, The South Bend Tribune, WVPE, Walt Disney World and Sojourners.
Your first semester. You can go on the air at 91.1 The Globe (WGCS), write for The Record student newspaper and work with FiveCore Media, rather than waiting until your junior year as students at many larger schools do. You graduate with shows, published work and at least one internship already completed. Through the Maple Scholars program, an 8 week research program, Goshen College students have been responsible for multiple national award winning documentaries over the last decade.

Yes, Communication is offered as both a major and a minor. The minor gives you the core communication skill set to complement another major, while the major goes deeper into journalism, PR, broadcasting, and digital media production.
