Walter E. Yoder, who lived from 1889 to 1964, was acknowledged as one of the most innovative music educators of the Mennonite Church. He was respected not only for his leadership in the music department of Goshen College, but for his church-wide contributions to Mennonite Hymnody.
The Mike Yoder Memorial Endowment for Marine Biology was funded by a gift on June 19, 1974, to Goshen College from his father and mother, Gordon R. and Esther Yoder. The gift to permanent endowment is in memory of Mike, 17, a victim of a car crash in October, 1971, and memorializes his interests in a career in oceanography.
Receiving an education was an important but difficult task for Ida. Because she realized that it continues to be a challenge for many people today, in 1996 she established the Ida Yoder Scholarship Fund at Goshen College.
Two scholarships are awarded annually to college women from funds provided by the Women’s Missionary and Service Commission of the Mennonite Church. The scholarships are awarded to students who are preparing for missionary or other Christian service vocations and are members in good standing in the Mennonite Church.
National statistics point succinctly to the need for more college scholarships across the country. The need is deeply felt at GC, where there has never been enough scholarship resources to go around.
Because of their personal interest in the Physical Education Program at Goshen College, Romayne and Ruth Sherman, 1510 College Ave., Apt. E, Goshen, Indiana, have decided to establish The Romayne and Ruth Sherman Student Aid Fund.
Debbie and Paul met in “Marriage and Family Class” at Goshen College in the late 1970s. Eventually they both graduated with degrees in social work. While they only worked in that field for a short time of their lives, the values learned from their experiences carried on in everything they did.
Erie and Orlyss Sauder are true symbols of the contemporary entrepreneur. As a young man, Erie had an idea that small tables could be built from scrap lumber that the company he worked for was throwing away.
Octavio G. Romero grew up in Tampico, Mexico, the son of Octavio S. and Piedad H. de Romero. As a young man, Octavio worked in his father’s business with the idea that he would some day take over the business.
Though Anna Richard (who was born and raised in Wayland, Iowa and attended Sugar Creek, Iowa City and Des Moines Mennonite Churches) herself bad only an eighth grade education, she had a very inquisitive mind, a great desire to read and learn, and a respect for formal education. Two of her four children and three of her four grandchildren attended Goshen College. It is in honor of her and her influence on her family that this scholarship is established.
