Since 1950, when the Goshen College nursing program became the first liberal arts college in Indiana to offer a bachelor of science degree in nursing, more than 1,500 graduates have established themselves in successful careers as registered nurses. Against the backdrop of a nation at war and within the theological context of a peace church, Mennonites began to discuss the need for church-based baccalaureate nursing education in the early 1940s. In June of 1941, a hospital committee was appointed by the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities to undertake a study of the needs for a bachelor of science degree program in nursing. This study started a chain of events which eventually culminated in the establishment of the School of Nursing at Goshen College.
