The Rosa Kauffman Scholarship Fund for Nursing Majors

Rosa Kauffman, who died March 20, 1983 after a short bout with cancer, was truly a servant in the spirit of Christ, and a gracious giver, both in life and in death. She was born in North Dakota December 11, 1918, and moved to Howard County, Indiana, during her childhood years after both of her parents died. Rosa temporarily ended her formal education at age 13 when she was removed from school to care for her foster mother. After the death of both foster parents, Rosa received her high school diploma through the GED program and then took courses to become a licensed practical nurse. For more than a decade, she worked in nursing at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Kokomo. In addition to her work, she often volunteered with the Red Cross blood-mobile and at Bona Vista, a local rehabilitation center. She was also known to take rehabilitating persons into her home until they were able to care for themselves. Although a quiet person, Rosa was known as one who inspired others to reach their Christian goals in spite of horrible odds.
