Elsie Hire Scholarship Fund

Elsie Hire grew up in Elkhart and graduated from high school in 1914. She then enrolled in Goshen College in June and graduated with a first-grade teaching certificate in 1915. She taught for 3 years at Monger school in Elkhart. Then, as Elsie Dausman, she married Merrill Hire of Ligonier and lived in that community.

Mrs. Hire joined the Ligonier Library Board of Directors in 1949 and served on that board until 1969, serving in all officer capacities several times.

By establishing this fund at Goshen College it was Mrs. Hire’s desire to assist first and second year college students to pursue an education. In subsequent years Mrs. Hire believed that students who want to continue will find other ways to generate sufficient funds to continue. Mrs. Hire’s primary interest was to assist students who have graduated from West Noble High School when they enroll at Goshen College. Students with demonstrated financial need receive preference for assistance from the endowed scholarship fund.

Elsie Hire died in 1993.
