Lee and Alma Sutter

Lee and Alma Sutter, Hopedale, Illinois, demonstrated a strong sense of loving duty toward their church, community, and family. Lee was a farmer with a flair for carpentry and construction. He was an outgoing man, well—respected by those around him. He had a strong appreciation for education and especially for teachers with high standards. He served on the local Board of Education, keeping the books and writing the checks. He was also a sports fan who enjoyed playing ball with his sons. Alma was a capable homemaker who liked to sew, bake, garden, and quilt. Both she and her husband were avid readers, and read frequently to their eleven children. They were hard workers, good managers, and loving parents. Their Sundays were always open to company and to the church. They were “Strong and good.” Lee passed away in 1975 and Alma in 1976.

Dennis and Marilyn Sutter

Dennis and Marilyn Sutter, people of generous and exuberant spirit, were deeply loved by family and friends. Dennis, the seventh child and second son in the Sutter family, graduated with a business degree from Bradley University in Peoria. He then owned and operated a supermarket in Metamora. In his work and outside activity Dennis demonstrated great drive, motivation and organizational skill. He was founding president of the Metamora—Germantown Hills Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International. Ha was also an elder of the church. If any church members were in business, Dennis would support them by buying their products. Marilyn attended Goshen College, taught for a while, and then worked with Dennis at the store. She loved to have company, to do family things and was active in the primary education department of the Metamora Sunday School. She was a very creative person who belonged to the local homemaker’s club and decorated the house for every season. Sutters’ three children, Joy, Jean, and Ron, were very important to them. They were faithful to the church, close to the extended Sutter family, and firm believers in education. Dennis and Marilyn passed away in 1977.
