Alvin and Helen Warstler Memorial Scholarship Fund

Both Alvin and Helen (Hoover) Warstler were born and grew up in Elkhart County, Ind, near Goshen.  After marrying in 1936, they spent the rest of their lives (with the exception of seven years) living in Goshen so the Goshen community was very important to them both.  Alvin attended Goshen College for only part of a year in the early 1930s before finishing his degree in education at Purdue University.  Alvin then spent 41 years teaching school, most of this time at Goshen High School.  Alvin and Helen were both very interested in supporting numerous educational endeavors undertaken by young people.

Even though his time at Goshen College was brief, Alvin carried with him very fond memories of his experiences at GC.  In the early 1960s, their son John Frank attended Goshen for two years and then in the latter 1960s, their daughter Nancy (now Thut) went through all four years at GC, graduating in 1970.  Since Goshen College has been special to the Warstler family, using part of the gift from Alvin and Helen’s estate to establish a fund that will benefit current students of this beloved community is indeed a fitting way to honor their lives, interests and memories.
