The Lewis Metzler Naylor Applied Music Scholarship

Lewis Naylor was born in Goshen, Ind. but grew up in Nappanee, Ind.  He was encouraged as a 7th grader to join the junior high band where achieved mediocrity playing the cornet.  When he was a 9th grader, Mr. Fred Webb, joined the high school faculty as the new band director.  Mr. Webb heard something in this barely mediocre cornet player that suggested he might display more talent playing another instrument, the French horn.

With inspiration provided by Mr. Webb, Lew excelled in the French horn, receiving a first place award as a senior at the Indiana District and State Music Competitions.  In addition, Mr. Webb encouraged and inspired many other Nappanee High School students to excel musically in performance and also in their appreciation of the music of many composers such as Sousa, Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven, Porter, and others. It is with deep appreciation and affection that this scholarship is dedicated to Mr. Fred Webb.  Mr. Webb resides now in the Washington, DC area.
