The Jane M. Lehman Elementary Education Scholarship Fund

Jane Marie Lehman was born in Castorland, New York. At an early age she developed a love for teaching and set up a classroom in the living room at her home to diligently teach her class of dolls, teddy bears and younger brothers. Jane graduated from Lowville High School and applied to Goshen College. Although her 4 older sisters went into the nursing profession, Jane never wavered from her goal to be an elementary school teacher. After graduation from Goshen College in 1954 with a degree in elementary education, Jane returned to New York and taught for 38 years in the same school system she had attended as a student. She was a very highly regarded kindergarten teacher and frequently parents requested that their children be placed in her section. Over the years many of her former students also requested that Jane be the teacher for their children.

During her teaching years in the Lowville, New York school system Jane was involved in a variety of school and professional activities. She was also a very active member of the New Bremen Mennonite Church. After retirement Jane moved to Goshen where she keeps in contact with Goshen College and activities. The Jane M. Lehman scholarship has been established to encourage and assist students to pursue a career in the teaching profession, especially at the elementary level.
