Goshen College to host summer camps for youth of all ages

Goshen College will once again offer a number of summer camp opportunities for youth of all ages interested in athletics, science, theater, film, art, culture and leadership. For all camps listed, the college will provide transportation between Elkhart and Goshen, meals for attendees and cost waivers for eligible students. All elementary and middle school camps will be $50 while Career Exploration camps for high schoolers are $125. Grade ranges for the camps are based on the grade the student will be entering in the Fall. For more information and to register for camps visit goshen.edu/summercamps.

Elementary and Middle School Camps

Read, Act, Create
Grades: 1-2
Date & time: June 3-7, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Experience the fun of Readers’ Theater. Reading comes alive while making props and performing simple skits. Students will build oral fluency skills while developing confidence and promoting teamwork. This camp is hosted by the Goshen College Center for Community Engagement. Transportation is available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Camp COE (Character over Everything)
Grades: 3-6
Date & time: June 10-14, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Students will have fun playing while building small and large motor skills through athletic challenges. Join this diverse group of young people as we build physical, social and emotional health learning together. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp include snacks and lunch.

ETHOS STEM Camp
Grades: 3-6
Date & time: July 15-19, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Students will be exposed to a range of activities and challenges that help them learn, play and connect STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to the real world. The ETHOS Summer STEM camp is an experimental and hands-on week-long camp with activities designed to be fun and engaging. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp include snacks and lunch.

Outdoor Fitness
Grades: 7-8
Date & time: June 3-7, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m

Students will learn the value of healthy eating habits and living an active lifestyle through fitness and recreational games and activities. Transportation is available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

STEM Lego Camp 101
Grades: 4-6
Date & time: June 17-21, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Students will learn team building and character skills during this week along with knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering skills. Working together on teams they will build a sophisticated robot using beginner programming and coding to compete on the last day of camp with the other teams. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

STEM Lego Camp 201
Grades: 7-8
Date & time: June 24-28, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Students will learn team building and character skills during this week along with knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering skills. ASL Camp 101
Grades: 6-8

Students will have fun exploring different art mediums including pencil, watercolors, colored pencil and collage to deepen and expand the way they see themselves and the world around them. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

STEM: Engineering and Mathematics
Grades: 4-6

Merry Lea – Junior & Teen IMN Summer Day Camp
Ages: 9-15
Date & time: July 22-26, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., daily

This camp costs $125 (*Cost includes books, snacks, administrative fees and program supplies. Fee is due in full upon registration and is non-refundable.)

This week-long summer day camp includes activities like canoeing glacial lakes, exploring Merry Lea Teaching Farm, fishing, learning about current research projects and removing invasive species and more. Activities include 6 hours of volunteer hours, dipping for macroinvertebrates, gardening at Merry Lea Teaching Farm, touring Gene Stratton-Porter’s cabin, volunteering with Noble trails, survival skills and more!

High School camps

Software/Coding
Grades: 9-12
Date & time: June 10 – 14, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Costs: $125

Students will learn the fundamentals of coding including functions, variables, data types, and data structures through engaging fun activities. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations.  Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Authors in the Making
Grades: 9-12
Date & time: June 10 – 14, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Costs: $125

Students will have the opportunity to explore fiction and nonfiction writing through mini-workshops. Working on independent projects of their own with 1-1 guidance and feedback, students can revise and refine a novel/novella project in progress OR work on transformative writing with a modern twist on classic stories through a marginalized characters viewpoint with the goal of anthologizing our work. The week will culminate with a workshop on the publishing process and a reading. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Filmmaking
Grades: 9-12
Date & time: June 24 – 28, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Costs: $125

Students will get a taste of Hollywood as they produce their own short films. They will learn scriptwriting, pre production, cinematography, directing and editing. They will get hands-on experience with professional digital cinema equipment and editing systems. At the end of the week they will premiere their films for their family and friends. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

ASL Camp 201
Grades: 9-12
Date & time: July 8 – 12, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Costs: $125

Students will have an introductory course in American Sign Language. They will learn survival signs, ABCs and communication as well as learning about careers in the basic field of ASL. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Young Entrepreneurs 
Grades: 9-12
Date & time: July 8 – 12, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Costs: $125

Students will hear and learn from local business owners on how to create a business model. They will learn the importance of record keeping, marketing, and growing their business. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Exercise Science
Grades: 9-12
Date & time: July 15 – 19, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Costs: $125

Students will gain hands-on experience conducting anatomical analyses as well as exploring physiological, biomechanical and psychological perspectives in exercise science. Knowledge and skills in these areas enable leaders to help people improve sport performance, increase fitness levels and to change physical activity behavior. In addition to participating in labs and activities, students will learn about careers in exercise science. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Poetry from Page to Stage
Grades: 9-12

Students will be empowered to go beyond the written word and bring their poetry to life through performances. This camp will nurture students’ creativity and writing styles. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Write On Sports
Grades: 7-9

Cost: Free

Students will discover their voice and confidently write about their interests and points of view, using sports as a theme to connect with others in an authentic and meaningful way. Transportation available from Elkhart and Goshen locations. Camp includes snacks and lunch.

Merry Lea – Conservation Leadership School
Grades: 11-12
Date & time: June 3-7, overnight
Costs: $75

Camp overnight and explore a world full of natural resources and conservation. Canoe across glacial lakes, plan and run a community nature event, and get a taste of careers like botany, land management or sustainable agriculture. Enjoy an educational and rejuvenating week at our beautiful 1,189 acre nature sanctuary with peers and professionals inspired by the natural world.
