From sports to theater to coding, Goshen College camps offer summer options for youth

Soccer camps for boys and girls
Ages: 3-14
Dates: June 13-17 (ages 3-14); June 20-24 (ages 5-14), 2016

The Goshen College men’s and women’s soccer programs will host soccer camps for boys and girls ages 3-14, set for June 13-17 (ages 3-14), June 20-24 (ages 5-14), at the Goshen College soccer complex.
The camps, directed by women’s head coach Scott Gloden and men’s head coach Arron Patrick, are built on the elements of fun, technique, tactics, repetitions and a low player-to-coach ratio. Gloden and Patrick, along with collegiate soccer players, will teach a variety of techniques and skill development, all appropriate to the age and skill level of the player.
The camps will run from 4 to 5 p.m. daily for ages 3-5; 9 a.m. to noon for ages 5-7; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 8-14. In case of inclement weather, the camp may continue inside the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center.
All campers will receive a Goshen College Soccer Camp T-shirt, and should bring their own soccer ball, shin guards, water bottle, sunscreen and other soccer equipment. Campers in the 8-14 age group should also bring their own lunches and campers in the 5-7 age group should bring a snack, except on Friday when pizza will be provided to both groups.
Campers who register by May 15 will receive a $5 discount; the fee will be discounted by $10 for the second child from a family and $20 for children of GC faculty and staff.

Musical Theater Camp
Ages: Grades 8-12
Dates: June 19 – 24, 2016
Cost: Morning Camp – $225; Evening Camp – $250; Both Camps – $400
Registration deadline: June 6
Develop singing, acting and dancing skills for the stage. In the morning camp, students will participate in workshops, master classes and private lessons. Students will prepare and perform one solo from a musical. During the evening camp, students will rehearse, choreograph and perform scenes from musicals such as Les Miserables, Spring Awakening, Music Man and more. Evening camp is highly recommended for all camp participants.
The camp will kick off on Sunday, June 19, with an evening of auditions, games and a pizza party. Each student should prepare a 60-second audition piece that shows off what they do best on stage. Cast lists and music will be distributed by the end of the evening.
The week will culminate in a performance on Friday night that will highlight scenes from the evening camp and soloists from the morning camp. The performance will begin at 7:30 pm in Umble Center and will be open to the public.

Girls Coding Poetry Camp
Ages: Grades 6-9
Dates: June 20-22, 2016
Cost: $35 ($45 after June 1)

The number of women in the tech industry is small, and growing that number starts by nurturing the next generation. In this camp, girls in grades 6-9 will learn to tell stories through computer code by combining the technical aspect of coding with the creative side of poetry.
Code poetry uses programming language to express poetry, play with sound or simply create aesthetic code. Marrying coding and poetry helps expand the boundaries of contemporary poetry by using code as a new language.

Write on Sports Camp
Ages: Grades 7-8
Dates: July 11-22, 2016
Cost: free (includes lunches transportation from select locations)

The fourth annual Write on Sports camp runs from July 11-22 at Goshen College. In partnership with the national Write on Sports program, Goshen Community Schools and the Goshen College Communication Department, the camp for middle school students teaches writing skills by harnessing their love for sports.
During the camp, students will interview athletes, including Isaac Huerta, a Goshen College all-conference forward who was named the best high school soccer player in the state in his senior year at Goshen High School; and Michelle Marquis, a Goshen High School graduate who became the first USA BMX certified coach and who for nearly two decades worked with Indy driver Lyn St. James.
Students will also learn interviewing techniques from journalists with The Goshen News and The Elkhart Truth. Bill Beck, sports editor at The Truth, served as a guest instructor at the start of camp last summer and then paid a return visit during a video project: “I was impressed as much as I was envious. These are bright kids. Wish I could be 12 or 13 again and learn this stuff.”
Field trips include a visit to Notre Dame University and a South Bend Cubs game, where students will have a chance to interview team members before the game.
Students will write sports stories and create videos during the two weeks; their work will be published online at www.goshen.edu/writeonsports and in a camp magazine.
The camp is free, with scholarships made possible by the Exchange Club of Elkhart County, the Maple Leaf Athletic Club, MutualBank, United Way of Elkhart County, the Windward Foundation and other donors.
