Bearing Witness Stories Project is now available in Spanish
From its beginnings, the Bearing Witness Stories Project has been a global endeavor with input from a variety of international church members. Yet, until very recently, its website was only accessible in English.
Recognizing the barriers an English-only site posed to global users, Bearing Witness launched a Spanish version of the site this month.
An initiative of Goshen College’s Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism (ISGA), the Bearing Witness site has served as a collection point for stories of costly discipleship to Jesus Christ from around the world, mainly from within the Anabaptist tradition. Although some stories previously existed in multiple languages on the original English site, there was no easy way for non-English speakers to navigate the site or find the stories that existed in their preferred language.
Despite the difficulty users faced in accessing non-English content, the few stories that were available in Spanish or French received fairly high levels of interaction from global users. Their reception further encouraged the ISGA to prioritize development and presentation of multilingual material.
The new design redirects Spanish-language users to a parallel Spanish site with the same basic content as the English site. A variety of people throughout the Americas have contributed to the translation of the site’s content, but Milka Rindzinski from Uruguay has been an especially critical translator.
Spanish was chosen for the initial foray into offering multilingual content because of strong, established connections in Latin America and the accessibility of Spanish translation. Eventually, Bearing Witness hopes to launch versions of the site in German and French as well.
Although the Spanish site does not yet have as many stories as the original English site, it will be regularly updated to include new content. In addition, stories received in Spanish will first be posted to the Spanish site before being translated for the English site. The blog, however, will remain a feature of the English site.

El proyecto Bearing Witness ya está disponible en Espanol
El proyecto Bearing Witness —una iniciativa del Instituto para el Estudio del Anabautismo Global (Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism—ISGA) de Goshen College, Indiana, EE.UU— fue desde sus inicios un esfuerzo conjunto de una variedad de miembros de las iglesias anabautistas de todo el mundo. Pero su sitio de web, lanzado en marzo de 2014, hasta hace poco existía solo en inglés.
Reconociendo las limitaciones de usar solo ese idioma, el sitio web en español, Somos Testigos (http://www.martyrstories.org/?lang=es) fue lanzado en diciembre, tan solo nueve meses más tarde.
Desde marzo el sitio web Bearing Witness (www.martyrstories.org) había recolectado historias de muchas partes del mundo sobre el costo de ser discípulos de Jesucristo, particularmente en la tradición anabautista. Originalmente el sitio en inglés incluyó algunas historias en otros idiomas, pero las personas que no usan el inglés no podían navegar en la red para encontrar historias en sus idiomas preferidos.
A pesar de la dificultad para acceder a otro contenido además del inglés, esas pocas historias en español y francés hicieron posible niveles de interacción bastante altos mundialmente. Esto le impulsó a priorizar más aún la recolección de materiales en otros idiomas.
El nuevo diseño web, Somos Testigos, invita a visitantes de habla española a entrar en un sitio paralelo al de inglés, con el mismo contenido básico. Personas de varias partes de las Américas han contribuido con traducciones, pero el trabajo de Milka Rindzinski de Uruguay ha sido clave.
Para este primer intento de ofrecer contenido multilingüe, se escogió el español debido a los vínculos ya existentes en Latinoamérica y la facilidad de traducción. Con el tiempo se espera lanzar versiones también en alemán y francés.
Aunque Somos Testigos todavía no incluye tantas historias como el original en inglés, el sitio es actualizado regularmente con nuevo contenido. Además, las historias recibidas en español serán publicadas en Somos Testigos antes de traducirlas para el sitio en inglés. El blog, sin embargo, continuará perteneciendo solamente al sitio original en inglés.
