Carrie Newcomer

Singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer will make her return to Goshen College for a performance with pianist Gary Walters and The Gathering of Spirits String Quartet on May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall.

Newcomer was the featured speaker at GC’s 118th Commencement ceremony in 2016, where she was presented with the college’s first honorary degree: a Bachelor of Arts in music for social change. Newcomer attended Goshen College for two and half years, including going to Costa Rica as part of the college’s Study-Service Term, but did not graduate from the college.

Newcomer is more than just a musician; she is a multifaceted artist, educator and activist. Recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine for “asking all the right questions,” Newcomer’s impact extends far beyond her captivating melodies. With 20 nationally released albums on Available Light & Concord/Rounder Records, including critically acclaimed works such as A Great Wild Mercy and The Beautiful Not Yet, she has established herself as a powerful voice in contemporary folk music.

In addition to her musical endeavors, Newcomer is a prolific author, with three books of poetry and essays to her name, including A Permeable Life and Until Now. Her literary contributions complement her music, delving into themes of introspection, spirituality and social change.

Newcomer has collaborated with musicians from around the globe, including an interfaith benefit album with Indian Sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan. Her dedication to social causes has taken her to diverse corners of the world, from performing in schools and hospitals in Kenya and the Middle East to serving as a cultural ambassador for the American Embassy of India.

In recent years, Newcomer has embraced digital platforms, garnering widespread acclaim as one of Substack’s most popular music writers. Her weekly reflections, videos, poetry and songs resonate with audiences seeking depth and connection in an increasingly fragmented world.

Newcomer’s upcoming performance not only promises a musical experience, but also an opportunity to engage with themes of justice, spirituality and community. In an era marked by division, Newcomer’s message of connection and compassion resonates deeply with individuals from around the world.
