Goshen College’s top scholarship recipients named for 2022-23

Goshen College has announced finalists and recipients of the school’s 2022-23 top scholarships for incoming first-year students.

President’s Leadership Award

Two college-bound students were awarded the President’s Leadership Award (PLA), which is the college’s top merit scholarship. The President’s Leadership Award is a competitive scholarship for high-achieving academic students who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities. Recipients will receive a full tuition scholarship renewable for a total of eight semesters.

To be eligible to apply for the PLA, students must meet one of the following criteria: Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.85 (on a 4.0 scale); score at least 1340 on the SAT or at least 29 on the ACT; or be a National Merit Semifinalist.

The 2022-23 President’s Leadership Award recipients are:

  • Brenna Spangler, of Waterloo, Indiana. Spangler plans to study Nursing.
  • Sophia Yordy, of Goshen, Indiana. Yordy plans to study Elementary Education.

The following students were named as finalists for the PLA scholarship, and will be awarded a Celebrate Scholars Award scholarship: 

  • Kate Bodiker, of Berlin, Ohio. Bodiker plans to study Writing and History.
  • Emma Campbell, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Campbell plans to study Elementary Education/English Learners (TESOL).
  • Callie Carter, of Harrod, Ohio. Carter plans to study Elementary Education.
  • Myangelic Collado, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Collado plans to study Business and Film Production.
  • Emma Dainty, of Fairfax, Virginia. Dainty plans to study Writing and Biology.

Intercultural Leadership Award

Ten students have been awarded the Intercultural Leadership Award. The Intercultural Leadership Award is for incoming first-generation students of color who have demonstrated a distinguished academic record, leadership potential and commitment to giving back to their community. The scholarship is for $20,000 a year and is renewable for a total of eight consecutive semesters based on academic performance and program participation.

In order to qualify to apply, students must meet the following criteria: Be of African-, Hispanic/Latino-, Asian- or Native-American heritage; be a first-generation college applicant; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card; have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale); and score at least 970 on the SAT OR at least 18 on the ACT.

The 2022-23 Intercultural Leadership Award recipients are:

  • Magaly Cazabal Gonzalez, of Goshen, Indiana. Cazabal Gonzalez plans to study Nursing.

Indiana Latino Institute Award

One student has been awarded the Indiana Latino Institute (ILI) Award. Goshen College is in partnership with the Indiana Latino Institute to offer the ILI Scholarship. The scholarship is for up to full tuition and is renewable for a total of eight consecutive semesters.

The Indiana Latino Institute Award is for incoming first-generation Latinx students who participate in the ILI Education Program for one full year before applying, participate in the ILI Coaching Program as a high school student, and participate in the ILI College Coaching Program as a college student. Recipients must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale), and score at least 970 on the SAT or at least 18 on the ACT.

The 2022-23 Indiana Latino Institute Award recipient is:

  • Fernando Daza, of Elkhart, Indiana. Daza plans to study Elementary Education/English Learners (TESOL) and Business.
