Goshen College announces top scholarship recipients for 2016-17

Goshen College has announced the 46 recipients of the school’s top scholarships for 2016-17.

Fifteen college-bound students are being offered the President’s Leadership Award (PLA), which is the college’s top merit scholarship. The PLA is given in recognition of outstanding academic performance and promise in potential leadership. The award, worth $19,000 per year and renewable for eight semesters, includes participation in an intercultural leadership development program. The award is renewable based on academic performance and the contribution of 15 hours per semester in the leadership program.

The 2016 PLA selections, who will receive the scholarship upon enrollment at Goshen College, are:

  • Kristin Bachman, of Boise, Idaho, is the daughter of Paula and Earnest Bachman. A senior at Boise High School, she plans to study history.
  • Stephanie Dilbone, of Albany, Oregon, is the daughter of Jon and Lisa Dilbone. A senior at South Albany High School, she plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Ben Fox, of Ada, Michigan, is the son of Cheri and Phil Fox. A senior at Forest Hills Central High School, he plans to study education.
  • Joshua Garcia, of Grayslake, Illinois, is the son of Sergio and Mako Garcia. A senior at Grayslake Central High School, he plans to study environmental science.
  • Christian Gehman, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, is the son of Wayne Gehman and Carmen Wyse. A senior at Harrisonburg High School, he plans to study environmental science or computer science.
  • Molly Kanagy, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is the daughter of Kent and Nancy Kanagy. A senior at Highland High School, she plans to study molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Rachaelann Klink, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, is the daughter Paul and Kathy Klink. A senior at Chambersburg Area Career Magnet School, she plans to study history or peace, justice and conflict studies.
  • Jace Longenecker, of South Bend, Indiana, is the son of Fred and Jewel Gingerich Longenecker. A senior at Trinity School at Greenlawn, his major is undecided.
  • Sarah Martin, of Columbus, Ohio, is the daughter of Galen and Debra Martin. A senior at Ohio Virtual Academy, her major is undecided.
  • Sophia Martin, of Lititz, Pennsylvania, is the daughter of Bryan and Andrea Martin. A senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, she plans to study history or biology.
  • Corrie Mathiak, of Berlin, Germany, is the daughter of Georg and Christina Mathiak. A senior at John F. Kennedy School, she plans to study peace, justice and conflict studies.
  • Gabriel Miller, of Ithaca, New York, is the son of Kevin Miller and Rebecca Stoltzfus. A senior at Ithaca High School, he plans to study biology.
  • Lucia Nisly, of Partridge, Kansas, is the daughter of Calvin and Andrea Nisly. A senior at Haven High School, she plans to study social work.
  • Marris Opsahl, of Clarksville, Ohio, is the daughter of Christopher and Marcy Opsahl. A home school student, she plans to study social work.
  • Luke Rush, of Goshen, is the son of Phil and Karen Rush. A senior at Goshen High School, he plans to study mathematics or physics.

Seventeen students are being offered the Center for Intercultural and International Education (CIIE) Leadership Award. The CIIE award is for incoming first-generation African, Hispanic/Latino, Asian or Native American heritage students in recognition of leadership potential and commitment to giving back to their community. The scholarship is up to 90 percent tuition and is renewable for a total of eight consecutive semesters based on academic performance and program participation. To qualify for the CIIE Leadership Award, students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a high school grade point average of 3.0 or above.  

The students who will receive the CIIE Leadership Awards upon enrollment at Goshen College are:

  • Ameera Alshuga, of Topeka, Indiana, is the daughter of Aziz Alshuga and Ahlam Thabet. A senior at Westview Junior-Senior High School, she plans to study biology.
  • Katie Celis, of Goshen, is the daughter of Rafael and Janet Celis. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study American Sign Language interpreting.
  • Vanessa Chavarria, of Goshen, is the daughter of Jesus Chavarria and Gabriela Suarez. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study history.
  • Sondra Flores-Reyes, of Goshen, is the granddaughter of Rick Grosch. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study elementary education.
  • Erica Frayre, of Goshen, is the daughter of Miguel and Veronica Frayre. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study nursing.
  • Lexus Garces, of Clintonville, Wisconsin, is the daughter of Jose Garces and Kelly Garces. A senior at Clintonville Sr. High School, her major is undecided.
  • Antonio Gutierrez, of Chicago, is the son of Antonio and Alicia Gutierrez. A senior at Goder College Prep, he plans to study marketing.
  • Xenia Isaula, of Goshen, is the daughter of Daniel Isaula and Yenia Yanez. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study business.
  • Veronica Mendez, of Elkhart, Indiana, is the daughter of Isauro and Francisca Mendez. A senior at Elkhart Memorial High School, she plans to study nursing.
  • Fatima Mercado-Navarro, of South Bend, Indiana, is the daughter of Antiono Mercado and Emilia Navarro. A senior at George Washington High School, she plans to study nursing.
  • Paulo Nunes, of Orrville, Ohio, is the son of Haroldo Nunes and Esmirna Maldonado de Martins. A senior at Central Christian High School, he plans to study exercise science.
  • Felix S. Ortiz, of La Plata, Puerto Rico, is the son of Felix Ortiz Figueroa and Aixa Rivera. A senior at Bonifacio Sanchez, he plans to study nursing.
  • Karen Ramos, of Goshen, is the daughter of Octavio and Van-Lendy Ramos. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study communication.
  • Lourdes Resendiz, of Goshen, is the daughter of Aberlardo and Erika Resendiz. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study accounting.
  • Penelope Rodriguez, of Goshen, is the daughter of Salvador Rodriguez and Argelia Perez. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study social work.
  • Sandra Rodriguez, of Palmdale, California, is the daughter of Enrique Ruvalcaba and Martha Cortez. A senior at William J Pete Knight High School, she plans to study physics.
  • Ariana Torres, of Cidra, Puerto Rico, is the daughter of Efrain Torres and Nydia Acosta. A senior at Migul Melendez Munoz School, her major is undecided.

In addition, fourteen high school seniors are being offered the Stoltzfus Diverse Leader Award, which is awarded to African American, Latino/a American, Asian American and Native American (ALANA) students who have demonstrated a distinguished academic record and significant leadership in activities that promote multicultural awareness in their local communities during high school. The Stoltzfus Diverse Leader Award is worth $5,000 per year. To qualify for the Stoltzfus Diverse Leader Award, a student must be a permanent resident or citizen of the United States with a 3.0 or greater grade point average in high school. Students entering college directly after high school are given priority.

The students who will receive the Stoltzfus Diverse Leader Award upon enrollment at Goshen College are:

  • Raia Arbisi, of Rockford, Illinois, is the daughter of Anthony and Michelle Arbisi. A senior at Guilford High School, she plans to study English.
  • Taliah Borom, of Indianapolis, is the daughter of Trenton and Tira Borom. A senior at Brownsburg High School, she plans to study Spanish.
  • Tristan Boyer, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is the son of Rebecca Boyer. A senior at Lampeter Strasburg High School, he plans to study biology or English.
  • Abby Buchanan, of Rochester, Minnesota, is the daughter of Michelle Ryan. A senior at Rochester Catholic School, she plans to study American Sign Language interpreting.
  • Gerryn Caudle, of South Bend, Indiana, is the daughter of Mark and Ginny Caudle. A senior at John Glenn High School, her major is undecided.
  • Rebecca Choi, of Arlington, Massachusetts, is the daughter of Yongha and Saehee Choi. A senior at Arlington High School, she plans to study elementary education.
  • Emma Eitzen, of Lititz, Pennsylvania, is the daughter of Dirk and Myrna Eitzen. A senior at Lancaster Mennonite School, she plans to study biology.
  • Keila Flores, of Goshen, is the daughter of Jose and Simona Flores. A senior at Goshen High School, she plans to study biology.
  • Jason Jaworski, of North Liberty, Indiana, John Jaworkski and Dede Christiani. A senior at Penn High School, he plans to study environmental science.
  • Elijah Lora, of Goshen, Juan Lora and Nancy Rodriguez-Lora. A senior at Bethany Christian High School, he plans to study history.
  • Abigail Rogers, of Goshen, is the daughter of Bradley and Susan Rogers. A home school student, she plans to study Spanish.
  • Alicia Thomas, of Goshen, is the daughter of Philip Thomas and Charlene Mast. A senior at Bethany Christian High School, she plans to study nursing.
  • Jhan Wagenaar, of Xenia, Ohio, is the daughter of John Wagenaar and Jan LaForge. A senior at Home School Clearing House, she plans to study Spanish and piano pedagogy.
  • Sharada Weaver, of Hyattsville, Maryland, is the daughter of Joseph and Rosanna Weaver. A senior at Northwestern High School, she plans to study music.
