Deaf Studies Plan of Study

Program Requirements

Deaf Studies 42-46 credit hours (core and one concentration area)

Core Program (30-33 credits including Gallaudet semester)

ASL 104 Deaf Culture – 3 credits
ASL 202 American Sign Language 4 – 4 credits
ASL 307 American Sign Language 5 – 4 credits
ASL 320 Deaf History – 3 credits
ASL 410 Senior Seminar – 1 credit
INT 380 The Deaf Community: Subcultures & Special Groups – 3 credits

Gallaudet semester (12-15 credits)

Students will spend one immersive semester as a guest student at Gallaudet University. During this semester, they will take courses that transfer to Goshen College and enhance the chosen concentration. Course schedules must be determined in consultation with advisors.

Social Work Concentration (12 credits)

SOWK 221 Human Behavior – 3 credits
SOWK 224 Intro to Social Work – 3 credits
SOWK 321 Social Service Field Exp – 3 credits
SOWK 322 Social Welfare Policy & Program I  – 3 credits

Education Concentration: (13 credits; optional 36-credit Secondary Education Track)

ASL 409 Internship – 3 credits (or student teaching)
EDUC 201 Foundations of Education – 4 credits
