Transition to Teaching

For the Working Teacher

Online licensure path for the working teacher

Across the country, many teachers are moving into classrooms with little to no educator preparation. Others are working in support positions in schools and want to transition into a certified position, but can’t take time off to go back to school. This version of Goshen College’s accredited Transition to Teaching program is tailor-made for these professionals.

Our program blends synchronous and asynchronous online classes to offer a course of study that is engaging, manageable, and relevant to classroom life. Our experienced faculty—all of whom have taught in P-12 settings—will provide support and guidance for teachers’ current school contexts while also creating a strong foundation on which teachers will build their practice. By taking one course at a time and completing all field work in their own schools, participants can earn a permanent instructional license in 16 – 20 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept transfer credits? Yes, we will accept up to two courses from an accredited institution if they were passed with a C or better and map onto courses in our program.

Can I apply if I’m teaching out of state? Yes. Prior to enrolling, we will work with you to confirm that you will be able to transfer our Indiana license to your state. At completion, we’ll guide you through the license transfer process.

Does my teaching count for coursework? Generally no. We need to address state standards through credited coursework. During the final capstone teaching, we do reduce the required credits by one for those teaching in their own classrooms.
