Religion in Senegal

The week began with a national holiday. Senegal recognizes both Christian and Muslim holidays. Monday was the Christian celebration of Pentecost. We met at the unit apartment for discussion and processing of our recent experiences. On Tuesday we traveled to an important city for a segment of the Islamic population. Touba was founded by Amadou Bamba as a sacred site for the Mouride Brotherhood. An enormous Mosque and surrounding complex was begun in 1927 and was completed in 1963.  However construction continues on the main Mosque. The only Mosque in Sub-Saharan Africa with a taller Minaret is in Casablanca, Morocco.  The citizens of Touba take great pride in their holy sites.
