On July 7, Write on Sports camp interviewed marathon runner, Justin Gillette in the Goshen College news room.
Gillette is a serious runner, as he averages of 115 miles each week. Although, he only plans on running 80-90 miles this rainy week. In a normal day of training he eats lunch; takes a nap at 1:00; then at 2 he runs and pushes his daughter in a stroller for 14 miles. During the 14 mile run, he runs the first 2 miles easily then sprints for 1 minute for the next 10 miles. After the 10 miles he jogs the last 2 miles and goes home with his daughter.
Gillette has a specific dieting plan because he chockes easily. A few soft food he mentioned were burritos and bologna-cheese sandwiches when he’s at his in-laws. Before and during races, Gillette will eat two energy gels to make up for the calories burned in the run.
He has a wife and two young children (5 year old boy and a 2 year old girl). Gillette is fifth ranked in the world and has won 83 marathons total with a best time of 2:25:44. Overcoming obstacles and setbacks are difficult but Gillette says,”Just keep looking at your goals and stay focused”.
