Religion

On the mainland of Tanzania, 35 percent of the population is Muslim, 30 percent are Christian and another 35 percent are of indigenous religions. In Zanzibar, more than 99 percent of the population is Muslim. Most students will visit or regularly attend religious services with their host families.

Music

A major connection between all Tanzanians is the Tarabu culture that creates a significant portion of social life through music. Taarab music combines rhythmic Swahili tunes with Islamic melodies to form popular compositions that often inspire listeners to dance.

Currency

The Tanzanian shilling is the staple monetary unit and is subdivided into 100 senti.
