Getting settled into a Lima routine

Monday and Tuesday, January 16-17

Gabby gets the low-down on vegetable prices.

The rapid changes of the first 4 days in Peru is giving way this week to the routines that will take them through the next 5 weeks.  One of those routines is learning how to take the public transportation from home to the Anglican church where we have our activities each day.  The first 2 or 3 days students are accompanied by family members, until the student gets the routine down.

The mornings consist of 3 hours of Spanish classes.  On Monday the classes focused on an assignment for the afternoon: shopping at a local market for a list of ingredients to make a Peruvian dinner.  During their first weekend with their families the students were assigned to ask their parents for a list of ingredients needed to make a Peruvian meal, and Monday afternoon they put their Spanish into practice asking at various market stalls where the different items were, pricing them, and then making the purchases.

Most days our lunches will be at the Anglican church.  Before and/or after lunches we typically do some other business, reviewing what we’ve learned so far, plans for upcoming events, quizzes, and a worship service once each week.  In the afternoons, except for when we have an occasional field trip, lectures lasting about an hour and a half are also held at the church.
