CURRENT COURSES
COMM 195 – Intro to Digital Media
Applied learning, involving work assignments on Globe TV, the television broadcasting arm of Globe Broadcasting. Focuses on television news fundamentals including field reporting, videography, directing, producing and newscast studio operations.
COMM 200 – Communication Practice
Applied work in communication with the student newspaper, yearbook, GC-TV, WGCS or other on-campus communication activity. A maximum of two hours applicable toward a communication major or minor. Consent of instructor required.
COMM 212 – Digital Media Production I
An introduction to digital media with an emphasis on field video production. The primary goal of the course is the development of the necessary video and audio skills and understandings needed to create effective digital media messages. Secondary goals include providing an overview of digital video production tools and techniques and exploring aesthetic and ethical issues of media. Students will take creative responsibility for fundamental media projects.
COMM 215 – Turning the Lens on Documentary Film
This course examines documentary as an art form and powerful storytelling tool. As distribution outlets like Netflix, hulu and YouTube become more popular, the access to documentaries is at a record high. The number of households without a paid cable or satellite subscription has increased over 67 percent in the last several years, as consumers shift to alternative distribution outlets, where documentaries are surging. The course will look at how documentaries shape our cultural conversations on topics of national importance. This course will draw from perspectives in PJCS, history, English and other disciplines in analyzing documentary films.
COMM 260 – Broadcast Writing
Students will study the principles, forms and techniques of writing for broadcast media. Assignments will focus on the writing and editing of broadcast news and commercial messages.
COMM 294 – Advanced Digital Media Methods: Pre-production
Covers the advanced skills involved in the planning, conceptualizing and writing of complex productions. Emphasis will be on proper storytelling techniques for effective communication through the visual medium. Course may provide opportunities to work for and with FiveCore Media clients on projects.
COMM 296 – Advanced Digital Media Methods: Production
Covers the advanced production skills in filming, framing, audio recording, lighting and directing. Emphasis will be on proper storytelling techniques for effective communication through the visual medium. Course may provide opportunities to work for and with FiveCore Media clients on projects.
COMM 298 – Advanced Digital Media Methods: Post-production
Covers advanced post-production editing, motion graphics, audio mastering, color correction and producing skills. Emphasis will be on proper storytelling techniques for effective communication through the visual medium. Course may provide opportunities to work for and with FiveCore Media clients on projects.
COMM 314 – Advanced Digital Media Immersion
The course focuses on advanced integration of video and audio elements in program-length productions. Students will work as members of a production team to create professional digital media projects. The primary goal of this course is immersion in a “real world” production experience. Students may play many roles as a part of the team, including producer, director, writer, videographer and video editor.
COMM 326 – Creating for the Web
This course examines the necessary tools for building successful web pages. Students utilize design elements and principles to emphasize the importance of the web as an effective form of communication. They also learn languages of page development (HTML/CSS) and responsive web design.
COMM 386 – Film
Survey of film as art, literature and mass medium. Historical development; authors and genres; philosophical, economic and political issues. A selection of 12 films for detailed study. Emphasis on “reading” film, understanding the medium’s function and exploring contemporary cinematic issues.
COMM 410 – Senior Seminar
A consideration of ethical and professional issues in contemporary communication. Information interviews with practitioners in communication. Writing of resumes. Required of all communication majors.
COMM 411 – Film Capstone Research
This course prepares students for their senior capstone project of an original short film project by creating a structure that will guide production. At the end of this course a student will have a finished script and pre-production plan. Students will function as the producer, writer and director.
COMM 413 – Film Capstone
Senior film production majors produce an original short film that must be ten-twenty minutes in length, demonstrate a high production value, and show clear and creative storytelling. Students must also organize a formal and public screening as part of their course requirements
PAST COURSES
Graphic Design Practices and Theory
This course offers an introduction into the practice of graphic design and it’s theories. This course is a computer lab based course where skills and theories will be taught and put into practice. Students will learn basics of the main aspects of print production, graphic design for web, and designing for communication. Students will be taught both the theory and mechanics of computer-aided graphic design.
TV Production
This video production course focused on studio operations and field production. It is designed to give students the background and instruction they need to communicate using television equipment in group and individual productions. Class discussions, lectures, labs and hands-on projects will be used to teach the process and skills of production.
Digital Media Production
Innovation continues to occur on the internet at an extremely lively pace. What was once the realm of email, FTP, Gopher, and the Web is barely recognizable a mere 10 years later. Keeping up with the speed of innovation and maintaining a familiarity with the most recent tools and capabilities is critical for communication students to understand. This course is designed to help students understand and effectively use a variety of “web 2.0″ and social media technologies in order to become better communicators in their selected fields.

2016 – BEA Media Arts Festival Faculty Award of Excellence
Received an award of excellence in the Faculty Promotional Video category. Kyle Hufford, along with alumni Jake Smucker and Abby Deaton, won this award for their work on a feature video for the Good of Goshen campaign that highlighted the craftsmanship and entrepreneur atmosphere in Goshen. This was one of three awards given in this category.

Directed and produced the “Good of Goshen” Campaign Commercial “The Shopper“, that won a national Silver Telly award, the Telly’s highest honor.

Directed and produced the “Merry Lea” video campaign that won a national Bronze Telly award in the Online Video Campaign category.

Directed and produced videos that won a silver and two bronze ADDY Awards for their digital advertising campaigns from the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Michiana.

Co-Produced three hour long “United Way of Grant County Telethon” which won a Golden Excellence (GEM) in Media Award in the Campaign Video category by the Indiana Association of United Ways.
CURRENT
2024 – “Cora Dale”
Indiana is currently one of the worst states in the United States to provide mental health resources for its citizens and can be traced back to the 1900s with the story of Cora Dale. Through a series of interviews and never before shared letters, this documentary unfolds the story of a mistreated young woman stuck within Midwestern culture that undermines mental health. We will then look at how Cora Dale’s legacy lives on, within hearts that are hopeful for a future that wishes impactful care.
2023 – “Goshen’s Golden Cage”
‘Goshen’s Golden Cage’ explores immigration in our local community and how some immigrants can feel stuck in a community despite it being a good place to live. This is a partnership with the Goshen College Maple Scholars program.
PAST
2022 – “Sundown Town”
‘Goshen – A Sundown Town’s Transformation’ explores Goshen, Indiana’s past as a racially exclusionary Sundown Town and how the community is finding ways to acknowledge this history and move forward. There have been thousands of such communities in the U.S., but Goshen is among the first to make a bipartisan declaration regarding “a past to stand against.”
2021 – “Blosser’s Park”
“Blosser’s Park” shines a light on the park that once made its home on the island in the middle of the Goshen Dam Pond. After it opened in 1909, Blosser’s Park drew people in from across northern Indiana. It hosted boats, beaches, picnic grounds and even a skating rink. After it closed in the 1940s it was largely forgotten and today only a few traces of its past remain on the island. “Blosser’s Park” hears stories from community members that went to the park in their youth and from historians who share the legacy it left behind.
2020 – “Vital Passage”
“Vital Passage“, in partnership with the Goshen College Maple Scholars program, chronicled the Plaut family who rescued 28 Jews from Germany in the early 1940’s. The Plauts sponsored these families to come to the United States and most ended up living and working in Goshen. Much of this story is unknown to most who live in Goshen today where little remains of a once thriving Jewish community.
2017 – “Deep Dive” – Goshen College Marine Biology Program Documentary
“Deep Dive“, in partnership with the Goshen College Biology program, explored the legacy of the college’s unique and long standing Marine Biology program. Professor Kyle Hufford traveled with a group of six film students to document Goshen College’s program at their facility in the Florida Keys in May of 2017. Following this course a post production course in the Fall of 2017 edited the documentary. The film is expected to be released in Winter of 2018.
2016 – “Admit One: The Story of the Goshen Theater”
As classic turn-of-the-century movie houses are decaying and being torn down, one town in rural northern Indiana is trying to save theirs. The Goshen Theater has seen multiple fires and still stood the test of time. Now its a race to save this cornerstone of the community and return it to its former glory. “Admit One” is the story of the history of this classic theater and of the people who are trying to revive it. This documentary was a faculty/student project in partnership with the Goshen College Maple Scholars program and FiveCore Media.
2014 – “Sunrise to Sunset: Sustainable Living in Ndeiya, Kenya”
Sunrise to Sunset: Sustainable Living in Ndeiya, Kenya is a short documentary, produced by Goshen College students and directed by COMM professor Kyle Hufford, looks at a new community oriented sustainability project in the region of Ndeiya, Kenya. Just outside of Nairobi in a rural farming area, there is a unique self help community who is tackling the challenges of a changing environment and economy. This community is helped and supported by the local Anglican Development Services ads-mtkenya.or.ke/ World Renew worldrenew.net/ and Foods Resource Bank (FRB) foodsresourcebank.org. In May of 2014 students and faculty from Goshen College traveled with FRB staff members to Kenya to learn, film and record the stories of these self help communities who FRB supports. Goshen College and FiveCore Media Students finished the documentary.
2014 – “Culture & Community: The Maasai Shift to Settled Life”
Culture & Community: The Maasai Shift to Settled Life is a short documentary, produced by Goshen College students and directed by COMM Professor Kyle Hufford, tells the story of the Maasai people of Kenya and their shift to settled life. In the Ngong hills at the edge of the Great Rift Valley the traditional Maasai people struggle for food and water security. Efforts are being made to transition these tribes from their traditional pastoral ways to crop farming and livestock rearing. This community is helped and supported by the local Maasai Integrated Development Initiatives Services (MIDI), Mennonite Central Committee mcc.org and Foods Resource Bank (FRB) foodsresourcebank.org. In May of 2014 students and faculty from Goshen College traveled with FRB staff members to Kenya to learn, film and record the stories of these self help communities who FRB supports. Goshen College and FiveCore Media Students finished the documentary.
2012 – “Breaking Down Barriers: The Journeys of the Apostle Paul”
The documentary was directed and produced by professors Seth Conley and Kyle Hufford, and the work of more than a dozen students, including nine who traveled to Greece and Rome for a May Term class in 2012. In “Breaking Down The Barriers: The Journeys of the Apostle Paul,” you’ll follow the path of biblical history through Greece and Italy and explore how Paul overcame religious, cultural, and physical obstacles as a leader of the first generation of Christians.
