Dr. Sarah E. Fredericks
Goshen College will host its 24th annual Conference on Religion and Science on March 7-9, featuring keynote speaker Sarah E. Fredericks, associate professor of environmental ethics at the University of Chicago. Registration is now open for the event.
Fredericks will deliver three lectures on morality and emotions amidst climate change, two of which will be free and open to the public in the Church-Chapel. The first, on Friday night, is titled “Dealing with Environmental Guilt and Shame,” with the second, “Can We Rest during Climate Change?” taking place the next morning.
A third lecture, “Joy amidst Climate Change?” will be open only to registered attendees. Along with attending the third lecture, registrants will have the opportunity to participate in discussions with Fredericks and each other after every lecture.
Fredericks’ research focuses on sustainability, sustainable energy, environmental guilt and shame, environmental justice, and the interaction of religion, science and philosophy. Her work draws upon pragmatic and comparative religious ethics. Her most recent book, Environmental Guilt and Shame: Signals of Individual and Collective Responsibility and the Need for Ritual Responses (Oxford University, 2021), discusses the ethics behind environmental guilt and shame, especially during climate change.
Fredericks holds a Ph.D. in Science, Philosophy and Religion from Boston University. Previously, she taught in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Texas.
