Week 1: History & Politics in Indonesia

Jan 24 2026

Our academic theme for Week 1 has been Indonesian History & Politics. We heard two lecturers on this theme, visited the Kraton (Palace and home of Yogyakarta’s Sultan), read historical sources and listened to an audiobook overviewing Indonesia’s dynamic history.

Our first lecture of Study Term was with Dr. Agus Suwignyo, Professor of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada. He spoke on postcolonial social and political history of Indonesia.

We learned about Indonesia’s political system and recent political history from UIN faculty member Prof. Muhammad Wildan.

And then later in the week toured the Kraton and Water Palace, both homes of Yogyakarta’s Sultan.
