Recent beautification improvements honored by Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce
Jul 09 2026

President Stoltzfus accepts the Fairbanks Award from the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, alongside Brian Mast, director of facilities, and members of GC’s nursing department.
In May, the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce presented Goshen College President Rebecca Stoltzfus with the Fairbanks Award, which recognizes businesses that have made an outstanding contribution toward the beautification of the community.
The Chamber called out the recent expansions at GC as “a remarkable update for its students and our overall community,” specifically mentioning the renovation of Westlawn Hall and its ability to expand access to cutting-edge technology for both GC students and the Goshen community. The space, now holding a state-of-the-art Center for Nursing and Public Health, is a groundbreaking response to a growing need for nursing professionals in the Goshen area and throughout the nation, holding spaces and technology used not only to train students but also professionals from throughout the area.
But, Westlawn is not the only recent improvement to the beautification of GC’s campus, thanks to significant contributions received from donors to the Connected Cause campaign, which included funding the renovation of Westlawn Hall and creation of the Center for Nursing and Public Health, as well as other projects to foster a more beautiful, inviting and inclusive campus. Here are a few of the recent campus improvements during the past academic year:

Campus wayfinding signage
Across the college’s campus, new wayfinding signs have been installed. The signs offer clear, attractive and unambiguous directions.
Brian Mast, associate vice president for facilities management, said that the new signage project “grew out of the desire to improve branding and wayfinding both on campus for pedestrians and vehicles.”
“Our intent was to create a uniform design for the signs, make them more readable and add to the overall campus aesthetics,” he continued. “We are thrilled with the results.

Stan King Tennis Complex
Through donors’ contributions, the Goshen College Tennis Complex received an upgrade, giving Maple Leaf student-athletes a true home-court advantage, enhancing the fan experience and reflecting the pride and strength of Maple Leaf tennis. Within months of the new complex opening, the women’s tennis team qualified for the NAIA national tournament as the Crossroads League runner-up, and the men’s team finished 7-2 in conference play.
The new project features eight purple courts on the same footprint and at the same central campus location as the previous ones. The courts feature new bleachers on concrete pads at both ends of the complex. The venue also has a new foundation, support building and fencing, and will feature a branded windscreen.
The new courts were named the Stan King Tennis Complex, in honor of the former player and 17-year head coach with the most wins in Maple Leaf tennis history. King was a 2017 recipient of the Roman Gingerich Champion of Character Award. The complex was dedicated in a celebratory public event on April 2.

New Maple Leaf Athletics branding in the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center
Maple Leaf fans who have attended a game this year have likely noticed a few changes inside the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center — including new banners, purple paint, and large Maple Leaf logos both inside and outside the gym.
The new branding represents Goshen College much more clearly, and helps to foster a sense of community and pride in the school’s athletic teams. Before even entering the gym, fans will see the purple and white flags flying in the parking lot, before heading toward a large purple leaf above the door, complete with a banner reading “Home of the Maple Leafs.”
Inside, a display directly above the gym entrance displays the words to a common song emanating from the student section: “We Love You, Goshen.” The mezzanine features purple trim and Goshen College banners throughout, strengthening fans’ connection to the school.
