Cooking Class: Learning to Make Nasi Goreng

Jan 25 2026

Our SSTers learned to make their own lunch! Nasi Goreng, Indonesia’s classic everyday meal, is a basic fried rice recipe with many variations. Usually containing flavors of shallots, garlic, chili (made as spicy as you like it!), some kind of protein (tofu, tempe, chicken and shrimp being most popular), topped with a fried egg, and served with garnishes like shrimp chips, fresh cucumber and tomato.

Students chopped, mashed, scooped, flipped and fried.

We sampled sweet lemongrass tea made by our instructors. And practiced making it again at home!

Curious to try Indonesian flavors? When we get back in April, ask an Indonesia ’26 SSTer to make you a meal!
