Goshen College wins Indiana Radio and Video School of the Year awards again

GOSHEN, IND. – On Saturday, March 23, Goshen College communication students traveled to the annual Indiana Association of School Broadcasters (IASB) College Awards Luncheon and Indiana Broadcasters Association’s (IBA) Spring Career Fair. Most notably, GC was awarded the Radio School of the Year and Video School of the Year by the IASB. In addition, the college landed 31 awards, including 9 first place honors across the competition against 14 of the top media colleges in the state.

This is GC’s sixth consecutive year being named Radio School of the Year and tenth time in 13 years. The ten titles are more than any other school since the competition began in 2005.

Amelia Lee receives an award.

“It’s been rewarding to see not only our success, but to see the next generation of Globe students dominate at IASB this year,” said Amelia Lee, senior broadcasting major and student station manager. “It’s been an honor to be part of Globe Media for the past four years and to help pave the future for the students coming after me. I am so excited to see what will come next for this extremely talented group of storytellers.”

Jennifer and Mike Murrell pose with their awards.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work put together by the staff at 91.1 The Globe, Globe TV and FiveCore,” said Dante Stanton, senior broadcasting major. “It’s an honor to be a part of a staff that’s made the past four years of my life some of the happiest, rewarding and most successful years I could ask for.”

There are five divisions awarded, Radio School of the Year, Video School of the Year, Sports School of the Year, News School of the Year and Emerging Media School of the Year. Each division consists of seven or eight categories that are judged with the top three submissions factoring into a “3-2-1” points system used to determine the overall standings in each division. Schools were also limited in the total number of entries across all divisions.

Sarah Lopez Ramirez and Aliah Campbell pose with their awards.

“This group is impressive,” said Jason Samuel, general manager for The Globe. “We had winners ranging from seniors to first-year students, in a host of categories. Storytelling is their strength and the judges agreed. I’m very proud of our student leaders for taking us across the finish line.”

“Every year our students continue to impress me with their dedication and talent,” said associate professor of communication Kyle Hufford. “It says a lot about how hard they work and their professionalism to be able to beat out larger schools like Butler, Indiana and Ball State.”

Goshen College students are being recognized for their work with co-curricular programs in the Communication Department: the college’s radio station, 91.1 The Globe, GlobeTV, and video production company, FiveCore Media.
