On Saturday, June 20, our students departed for a new host family and a new setting to begin their Service Term, the second half of SST. Salisbury and Avebury

Our group departed London early in the morning on Tuesday the 16th, headed for Salisbury. Shortly after arriving, the renowned Salisbury Cathedral was within sight – and looking as majestic as ever on such a clear day. From our wonderful guide James, we were delighted to learn all about the cathedral’s history, such as its rapid construction for its time (1220-1258) and its unique position as a large building atop marshy ground.
We then had the opportunity to tour the inside of the cathedral; some of us chose to tour the ground level of the building, while others chose to tour up to the cathedral’s spire. Those of us who got to explore the spire climbed many, many steps and were guided through the historic significance of the higher floors before eventually reaching the base of the spire, where upon stepping outside we were provided with a breathtaking view of Salisbury from three different sides.
After Salisbury, our group headed over to Avebury, where we got to experience the site’s historic henge monument (and lots of sheep, too). Beautiful grasslands and flower fields were in abundance surrounding the town, and it definitely provided a quiet and serene environment. On our ride back to London, we took a detour so we could see the one and only Stonehenge as we drove by. So much to see and so much to love about Southwest England from just a day trip!
