Slowly Exploring (and Baking!) in the Plains

May 10 2022

I am so sorry for the delay.  I did attempt to post several days ago, but it looks like it never published.  Our internet has been very dicey until now.

So let me catch you up!  Our 27 students trickled in to Delhi over several flights on May 4th and 5th.  Despite some serious jet-lag we were able to squeeze in a couple of site-seeing tours within the city.

MAY 6:

After breakfast we took a walk from our lodging to visit a large Sikh temple in the city.  We were not allowed to photograph the inside of the temple, but we were able to walk through and see how people come to worship and pray.  This particular temple in Delhi is quite large.  They offer free meals to anyone who comes, no questions asked, no requirements, every day of the year.  There are a few who have used this as their primary source of food for the majority of their lives.  Quite a testament of service.

In the later afternoon, after a subway ride and a long walk, we found our way to the Aravalli Biodiversity Park and spoke with Vijay about the restoration project on this spot of land as well as how other community members are taking steps to make Delhi more green.

May 7 and 8:

We woke very early the train to Haridwar where we had our next adventure.  We stayed one night at a Hotel in the city, and two nights at a Yoga resort, along the Ganga (Ganges) River, that had attempted to open just before the pandemic hit in 2020.  Thankfully, they were able to keep their business going and did an amazing job hosting such a large group of us.

We also took a hike to learn about another restoration area, where Suniti, our personal naturalist, explained the local fauna and flora, as well as steps that are being made to protect the environment.

May 9:

On this day we took jeeps into Rajaji Tiger reserve for a memorable safari tour.  I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

May 10:

Finally, we made our way from the plains (and the oppressive heat) to about 7,000 feet above sea level to Hanifl Center.  Here we will stay for the next several days for lots of learning and preparing for our trek in the Himalaya.

Needless to say, we have been very busy and are having a great time.  Stay tuned for more adventures to come.
