Transition to Teaching

Earn your initial teaching license without a master’s degree.

Become the Teacher Today’s Classrooms Need

A streamlined licensure path for college graduates ready to step into the classroom.

The Transition to Teaching program is for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to earn their initial elementary or secondary teaching license. All coursework is remote and uses a mix of independent work and cohort Zoom meetings, giving you flexibility and dynamic interaction with classmates and professors.

During the capstone teaching semester, students who are not already teachers of record for their own classrooms will need a full-time placement to complete their final field experience before licensure.

At the end of the program, you have the option of adding 13 credit hours for a second license in English Learners and continuing into a full Master of Arts in Teaching.

What This Program Is

  • $525
Per credit hour for 2025–26. Billed by semester; payment plans available.
  • 100%
Remote. Synchronous Zoom classes during the school year, asynchronous coursework in summer.
  • 2
Years to finish, with the flexibility to keep your current job while you study.

    Built Around Your Life

The Transition to Teaching program runs on the school calendar. You’ll meet weekly on Zoom with your professors and cohort during the academic year, then move to asynchronous summer coursework with weekly due dates so you can pace yourself.

    This program is ideal for

    • Career changers transitioning into teaching
    • Paraprofessionals or substitute teachers seeking licensure
    • Educators already working in schools who want to keep working while earning their license

    What You’ll Study

Choose between two paths: Elementary Education TtT (22 credits, K–6 license) or Secondary Education TtT (18 credits, grades 5–12 in your subject area).

Coursework integrates the most recent research on students, schools, and learning, with an asset-based approach to students’ diverse backgrounds and abilities. Faculty advisors with P–12 teaching experience guide you through each step.

Most courses include school-based teaching requirements. If you’re not currently in a classroom, our faculty will help arrange placements.

      • The Transition to Teaching program at Goshen College has been truly life-changing. As a wife and mother of two active children, balancing a full-time job with cooking, cleaning, and being present for my family felt like a massive challenge. However, Goshen’s flexible schedule made earning my Master’s degree possible. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and understanding; I truly feel that without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I started this journey as a part-time instructional assistant and am now a full-time licensed teacher. If you are a working parent who feels like this might be impossible, I’m here to tell you that you can do it. Goshen makes it doable.
