New exhibit features work of South Bend photographer Justin Kronewetter

Artist Justin Kronewetter is currently showing a collection of his photography at Goshen College’s Hershberger Art Gallery, located in the Music Center, in an exhibit entitled “The Gift of Seeing.” There will be a closing reception on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m., followed by an artist talk at 3 p.m.

The show features Kronewetter’s photos from his time in retirement as he travels around the Rocky Mountains, capturing “common things seen in an uncommon way.”

“I take particular satisfaction in finding my subject matter among those things that are normally overlooked due to their presumed insignificance,” said Kronewetter.

Kronewetter was born and raised in South Bend. He received his bachelor of fine arts degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1962, where he majored in fine art with a focus on painting and printmaking. From 1964 through 1966, Kronewetter attended graduate school at Cranbrook Academy of Art and received a master of fine arts degree in painting and printmaking.

Kronewetter began his full-time teaching career at Albion College in 1964 where he taught classes in painting, drawing, two-dimensional design and art history. During his time at Albion College, Kronewetter was a co-recipient of a grant that funded classes in photography, becoming the catalyst for his conversion from painting to photography.

From 1972 to 2008, Kronewetter was a member of the fine arts faculty group at Ohio Wesleyan University, teaching classes in painting, drawing, two-dimensional design, American art history and photography. Kronewetter ended his time at Ohio Wesleyan University in 2016 servingas department chair and exhibitions director. As exhibitions director, Kronewetter curated more than 200 exhibitions and built a collection of more than 3,000 art pieces for the Richard M. Ross Art Museum at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Hershberger Art Gallery is located inside the Goshen College Music Center. The Gallery is open during August on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the academic year, it is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 to 4 p.m. on weekends. The gallery is closed during academic holidays.
