Fall Mainstage ‘Brooklyn Bridge’ is a story of determination, togetherness and hope

The Goshen College Theater Department will present its fall mainstage play,  “Brooklyn Bridge” by Melissa James Gibson, on Saturday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 14 and Sunday Nov. 21, at 2:30 p.m. The Nov. 21 performance will be ASL interpreted.

“Brooklyn Bridge” is a family friendly production especially geared toward 5th-8th graders.

When fifth-grade latch-key child Sasha can’t find a pen to write her due-tomorrow report on the Brooklyn Bridge, she works up the courage to break her mother’s rules and venture out of their apartment for help. There, in view of the magnificent bridge, she discovers a diverse collection of neighbors, each special in their own way but alike in their deep good-heartedness. This humorous drama celebrates the making of things; research papers, bridges, community. Along her journey Sasha learns that there are facts and then there is what’s important—and what’s important is what matters.

“This play is a story of the community Sasha builds as she faces one of her biggest challenges,” Anna Kurtz Kuk, the play’s director and assistant professor of theater, said. “She draws inspiration from what she sees as a magical moment in history; the creation of the Brooklyn Bridge when something seemingly impossible was built; when great obstacles were overcome; when people sacrificed and worked together to create what became the “eighth wonder of the world. Sasha’s story is one of determination, togetherness and hope; it’s a story that will resonate with audiences of all ages.”

Ticket are $10 general admission, $5 for seniors and students. GC students and employees are free with ID. Tickets can be reserved online at goshen.edu/tickets or by calling or visiting the GC Box Office, 574-535-7566. Tickets will also be available at the Umble Center beginning one hour before the show.
