Baseball Academy, University, and Biodiversity

May 08 2026

Each day in Puerto Rico brings new opportunities to see and experience newness.  One particularly special element of today’s activities was the chance for the Goshen baseball guys to interview graduating seniors at the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy & High School.  The school is sponsored by Major League Baseball, which just made a significant financial investment to build new practice facilities for them.  In spite of some language barriers, the guys found many points of connection over both their shared love of baseball and many other things that they have in common as young men growing up in today’s society.  After our time at the academy, we stopped at a roadside restaurant for some delicious traditional Puerto Rican food, including soft, juicy pork from whole hog roasts.  We wrapped up our day with a visit to the University of Puerto Rico Cayey campus, which is the alma mater of one of our own current GC professors.  The day finished with a winding bus drive through mountains, small cities, and towns, where we avoided many road obstacles commonly found in Latin America.  Everywhere we go, we see plants and landscapes that are unique to us and beautiful to behold.
