The facilities

Goshen College offers modern classroom and laboratory facilities to create a
comfortable teaching and learning enviornment. Our instructional laboratories
have twice received National Science Foundation support based on the concepts
and ideas of our course program.

Undergraduate research facilities

Goshen College’s undergraduate research program has specialty instruments and laboratories appropriate for research. The facilities for the optical holography work are the result of NSF support since 2000.

Physics reading room

Goshen College also provides a physics reading room where you will find the most modern journals in physics and a growing collection of selected books ranging from the technical to philosophy, history and theology. Often the reading room is the first stop in looking for information you may need. It is also a gathering place for discussions.

The Turner Labratory

The Turner Laboratory is the research laboratory of the Physics Department and houses the undergraduate research program. The laboratory was founded in 1970 with an endowment provided by The Basil Turner Foundation. Basil Turner's vision was to provide facilities and support for research involving faculty and students. In 1970 this was a bold vision for a small liberal arts college.

The original name of the laboratory was the Turner Precision X-ray Measurements Laboratory, which reflected the expertise of the department chair at that time: the late Professor Robert C. Buschert. Professor Buschert's ingenuity and energy produced some of the finest precision diffractometers available, gaining for the Turner laboratory a reputation among research universities and industrial laboratories.

The present laboratory effort reflects the shifting interests of the research community. The present research program includes three areas: acoustics and physics of musical instruments, the biophysics on mebranes and ion channels, and x-ray diffraction studies of superlattices and thin films. In each these areas a small group of students works closely with an individual professor. 

Results of research are published in journals and presented at professional conferences or at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research.
