Horswell Publishing Fellowship

The Goshen College English Department has several publication opportunities available through a gift from Sushil and Christine Horswell Jain of Windsor, Ontario. In honor of Christine’s parents, Mary and Dr. Richard Horswell of Elkhart, Indiana, the Horswell Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for students to gain publishing and editing experience, while the Horswell Anthology provides an opportunity for any student or instructor to publish a collection of work.

The competitive Horswell Fellowship is awarded to an English or Writing major or minor who is interested in learning more about the process of publications, and has contributed to publications boards. To apply for the Horswell Fellowship at the end of spring semester, contact Jessica Baldanzi.

The Horswell Fellowship offers students a unique experience in all phases of publishing print work, from commissioning and editing to producing, marketing, and distributing. It’s a great way to get hands-on, resume-worthy experience in this field.

The Horswell Fellow, and the Horswell Apprentice, are responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Pinchpenny Press and Broadside, publications of student, faculty, staff, and guest writing.

Under the supervision of a faculty sponsor, some the main duties of the Horswell Fellow are to:

serve as executive secretary of the Broadside and Pinchpenny Press editorial boards
publicize the work of Broadside and update the subscriber list
lay out, publish, and distribute Broadside poems
support student authors and editors in publishing their Pinchpenny Press books
coordinate contests sponsored by Broadside, and readings and sales of Pinchpenny Press books.

One Horswell Anthology is published each year from faculty submissions of manuscript proposals. Each anthology is a collection of student writing from a class that can be used as a text for future class offerings. Student editors gain valuable publishing skills by selecting, editing and producing the text.
