GC AI ETHICS STATEMENT
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly evolving and creates possibilities for easier access to information, accelerated learning processes, and efficiencies for our educational mission. At the same time, this abundance is negatively impacting the environment, data privacy, our cognitive abilities and our capacities for rest. Technology is not neutral — it encodes values, shapes identities, and structures power. These are complicated realities, but we seek to engage them with joy, curiosity, and humility, delighting in all that there is to explore and experience. As a college shaped by Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition, we discern technology’s role in community, guided by our commitments to global citizenship, justice and peacebuilding.
We resolve to…
center community, justice, and joy in the way of Jesus at the heart of Goshen College’s liberal arts education.
enrich our students’ lives and careers through an education that cultivates critical thinking, moral reasoning, creativity, and curiosity; allows for experimentation and failure; and prioritizes experiential learning.
actively discern the ways in which technology can enhance human flourishing and uphold human dignity, both within our GC community and beyond.
strengthen our commitment to diversity by acknowledging that technology impacts different communities in different ways and by seeking equitable and inclusive solutions on our own campus.
utilize AI technology to develop more accessible, straightforward, and effective operations across campus, wisely stewarding the human, environmental and financial resources connected to our GC community.
involve students, faculty, and staff in ensuring equitable access to new tools and learning opportunities across different disciplines, departments, perspectives and identities.
continually learn about the impacts of AI on the environment and the planet’s resources and to educate ourselves about the actions we can take to help people and our planet flourish together.
