You’ll engage with a wide range of genres, from creative nonfiction and poetry to digital media and scriptwriting, while working closely with faculty who are published authors, editors, and experienced communicators. The writing major or minor is an excellent complement to majors such as English, filmmaking, journalism, marketing, communication, and history.
Credits and Requirements
The writing major and minor allow you to focus your interests through elective coursework in areas like fiction, nonfiction, poetry, media, or professional writing. You’ll also complete a writing portfolio that showcases your growth and prepares you for your next steps. Many writing majors also publish a book by the time they graduate.

You’ll apply your writing skills in real-world settings. Many writing majors and minors contribute to campus publications like The Record, our distinguished student-run newspaper, work as writing tutors in the Academic Success Center, or intern with local organizations, publishers, and nonprofits. You’ll also have opportunities to present your work at public readings and campus events.
