Why Study Religion at Goshen College?
Goshen College’s Bible and Religion program is for those who feel called to explore faith more deeply, understand the church’s story, and apply their convictions in meaningful, real-world ways. Inspired by the motto “faith seeking understanding,” this program blends rigorous academic study with spiritual formation, peacemaking and community development. You’ll gain a comprehensive foundation in biblical studies, theology, ethics and religious history, all with an emphasis on intercultural understanding and Anabaptist values. Graduates go on to meaningful careers in ministry, education, social advocacy and beyond.
Career Paths
A Bible and Religion degree equips you with skills in critical thinking, ethical reasoning and intercultural communication, which are all valuable in a variety of professions. Alumni have pursued roles such as:
- Faith-based Leadership — pastors, chaplains, missionaries
- Social Impact and Advocacy — social workers, policy advocates, peace workers
- Education and Research — teachers, professors, archivists
- Media and Communication — writers, journalists
- Additional professional paths — lawyers, counselors, seminary administrators, and more!
Many graduates also continue their education at top theology and religious studies programs.
Curriculum & Credits
The major provides a strong foundation in biblical studies, theology, ethics, and interfaith engagement. You’ll explore key theological texts, historical contexts, and contemporary ethical issues. Some of the core class include options like “Sustainability and the Sacred” and “Introduction to World Religions.”
At Goshen College, learning extends beyond the classroom. As a Bible and Religion student, you’ll:
- Complete a field study or internship aligned with your vocational interests.
- Spend a summer in ministry through the Ministry Inquiry Program [LINK – MIP page], serving as a pastoral intern.
- Get involved with Campus Ministries [LINK – Campus Ministries page] — plan chapel services, lead prayer groups, write devotionals, and organize service events.
- Serve as a Worship Assistant or Ministry Leader in residence halls, helping cultivate spiritual life on campus
