Why Study Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Goshen College?

As a molecular biology and biochemistry major or minor at Goshen College, you’ll explore the building blocks of life and gain a deep understanding of how molecular processes impact living organisms. Whether you’re interested in medicine, research, biotechnology, or genetics, this program gives you the scientific foundation and hands-on experience to pursue your goals with confidence.
You’ll study the structure and function of biological macromolecules, the regulation of gene expression, and the interactions of proteins, DNA, and RNA in living systems. With small class sizes and personal mentorship from expert faculty, you’ll be well-prepared for graduate study or a career in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or life sciences research.
Career Paths
Graduates of the program are well-prepared for roles such as:
- Geneticist
- Molecular Biologist
- Research Scientist
- Physician or Surgeon
- Pharmacologist
- Biomedical Engineer
- Clinical Lab Technologist
Our alumni have gone on to prestigious graduate and medical schools and now work in research institutions, hospitals, government agencies, and biotech companies.
Credits and Requirements
The molecular biology and biochemistry major is designed for students pursuing careers in medicine, biotechnology, genetic research, or related health and science fields. The program also offers a minor, allowing students in other majors to expand their knowledge of molecular science.
Core and elective courses cover topics like:
- Molecular Genetics
- Biochemistry
- Microbial Biology
- Organic Chemistry
- Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Cell Biology
You’ll also complete a collaborative research project that serves as your senior thesis.
Hands-On Learning Opportunities
You’ll learn science by doing it. Through weekly labs, research assistantships, and internships, you’ll gain real-world experience in experimental design, lab techniques, and data analysis. Many students participate in faculty-led research or spend a summer in the Maple Scholars program, and others complete internships with hospitals, research labs, or pharmaceutical companies.
Scholarships
While there are no scholarships specifically for molecular biology and biochemistry, students may qualify for general academic scholarships or science-specific awards through Goshen College. Visit the financial aid office for current opportunities.
Facilities & Resources
Goshen’s science facilities include modern labs equipped for molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology. Students also have access to the Schrock Science Hall and research opportunities at the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center and J.N. Roth Marine Biology Station.
