Music Department Achievement Awards

  for incoming students in 2009-2010

In recognition of their commitment to the music department at Goshen College, various donors have established music scholarships at Goshen College. Awards are typically in the $1,000 to $4,000 range annually, and all instruments and voice parts are encouraged to apply, including students with interest in composition.

Eligibility

Music Department Achievement Awards are available to:

• First-year students who will participate actively in the music department. The awards will be renewed for an additional six semesters for students who declare a major or minor in music or music education. Recipients must be eligible for admission to Goshen College and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  

• In addition to the Music Dept Achievement Award, a student is eligible for one more award from the following list: Academic Scholarship, Anglemyer Education, Athletic, Gorsline Business/Communication/Theater, Swallen Missionary, and Tuition Discount Benefits. Goshen College limits merit awards so that more funds can be awarded on the basis of financial need. Applications are accepted for any number of awards.

Procedure for Applying

• Complete an application for admission to Goshen College. (On-line application is available at www.goshen.edu/admission/ap_main.php)
  
  
• Complete the Music Department Achievement Award application. PDF files of the achievement award application, reference form, and information form are available for download (coming soon!)
  
  
• Ask your music teacher to complete and submit the reference form.
  
  
• Audition at Goshen College on Friday, November 14; Friday, January 23; Saturday, January 24 (at Celebrate Scholar Day); or Saturday, March 7.  Students who cannot audition in person will be asked to submit an audio or videotaped audition.

Audition Procedures

Each applicant should prepare an audition of 10 minutes, which can include vocal and/or instrumental performance and/or recordings and scores of original compositions. Those applicants with more than one performing medium are encouraged to include them all. Music selections should come from the standard core repertoire, and should represent at least two contrasting styles and tempi per instrument. Vocalists are encouraged, but not required, to perform at least one selection in a foreign language. Pianists and vocalists are encouraged to perform from memory. We will provide accompaniment if needed. No recorded accompaniments are permitted. Unaccompanied repertoire is allowed.  Please note that in the interest of time the attending music faculty may cut off an audition at the end of 10 minutes.  This will have no impact on the results of your audition.

Renewal of Award

Students may renew the scholarship for an additional six semesters after the first year by continuing to major or minor in music or music education at Goshen College, by maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.0, and by continuing core ensemble activities and lessons as prescribed by the music department chair in the award letter.

Deadlines

Applicants should complete all steps by November 1 if auditioning on November 14  All steps should be completed by January 16 if auditioning on January 23 or 24, and by March 1 if planning to audition on March 7.
