Head Coach - Women's Basketball

Position Summary:

As an institution dedicated to helping our student-athletes achieve excellence in competition, in the classroom, in the community and in their personal character, the Women’s Basketball Head Coach will provide leadership in the ongoing development of the basketball program at Goshen College in order to achieve these goals. The head coach is responsible, within the guidelines and regulations of Goshen College, the Crossroads League and the NAIA, to prepare, organize and implement all schedules in a cooperative effort with the athletic department. The coach will prepare, organize and implement team budgets within departmental guidelines. The head coach will assume the responsibility of recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes who will help the team achieve competitive excellence, academic success and will be positive contributing members to the team and Goshen College community.

Essential Functions:

Enrollment Management

  • Oversee recruitment and selection of student-athletes to achieve goals set by the Director of Athletics and the Vice President for Enrollment Management
  • Ensures compliance with NAIA recruiting rules and regulations; initiates process for determining academic eligibility
  • Manage athletic recruits and commits in CRM (Salesforce), including entering all institutional gift aid offers and updating the commitment status of each athletic recruit or commit
  • Recruit and retain team members. Meet yearly roster sizes as advised by the Athletics Director and Vice President for Enrollment Management
  • Ensure that all women’s basketball student-athletes meet NAIA eligibility requirements and prepare eligibility forms to be sent to the NAIA, and conference member schools.
  • Manages sport scholarship budget in accordance with the discount rate management target set by the Director of Athletics and Vice President for Enrollment Management
  • Develops relationships and networks with local high school and community college coaches for women’s basketball to support student athlete recruitment efforts and increase brand recognition for Goshen College with these institutions
  • Attend games, tournaments, and other events that feature prospective athletic recruits and collect their contact information (as appropriate) for upload into CRM (Salesforce)
  • Follow all guidelines indicated in the Recruiting Guidebook for Athletics

Student-Athlete Experience

  • Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the athletic program; to include adhering to and enforcing all Departmental policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of the college, the Crossroad League and the NAIA.
  • Provides leadership and instruction on personal and athletic development of student-athletes, to include counseling team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters, when appropriate.
  • Develop practice schedules and teach the fundamental skills required for the women’s basketball program.
  • Develops and publishes team rules regarding appearance, practice, class attendance, punctuality, dress code and general standard of behavior, with approval of the Athletic Director. Enforces such team rules with appropriate disciplinary action.

Fiscal Management

  • Submits sport annual budget requests. Manages sport programs within the framework of a balanced budget. Manage both operating budget and above budget account.
  • Develop fundraisers to improve the women’s basketball program.
  • Purchase equipment and uniforms, and maintain records of all purchases.
  • Develop the yearly schedule and oversee all travel arrangements for the team.

Professional Development

  • Establish winning teams within the bounds of good sportsmanship.
    • Develop teamwork, morale, sportsmanship, courtesy, fair play, academic excellence, and strict adherence to rules of training and conduct.
    • Promote the attitude among student athletes and coaches that winning is important but is secondary to good sportsmanship and the overall welfare of the athlete.
  • Promote unity within the coaching staff and within the framework of the athletic department.
  • Develop and actively participate in a plan to enhance public relations for the women’s basketball program.
  • Complete professional development (books, mentors, webinars) yearly to remain up to date in coaching.
  • Travel and work a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of various use groups and programs of the College.
  • Actively participate in related consortiums, partnerships, organizations, etc.

Academic Excellence

  • Formulate a successful philosophy to promote the educational welfare and sportsmanship of the student-athlete.
  • Track the progress of each player in all classes and collaborate with Academic Success Center on academic excellence.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • No less than 5 years prior experience required in an area related to Athletics or Physical Education.
  • CPR, AED, First Aid required (can be completed after hire)

Preferred:

  • Masters preferred in an area related to Management, Administration, Athletics or Physical Education
  • Knowledge of national athletic governing bodies and associated compliance manuals
  • Understanding of communications, social media and public relations
  • Strong fiscal management and ability to create departmental budgets
