Good Library Services Assistant & Circulation Desk Supervisor

Position Summary:
Goshen College invites applicants for the position of Good Library Services Assistant and Circulation Desk Supervisor. This position coordinates access to library materials and services through management of the circulation desk, which includes hiring, mentoring, and supervising 10-15 student workers. Other responsibilities include ordering and processing library materials, Inter-Library Loan support, and events and display support.
The position is .75 FTE (35-40 hours while classes are in session — ~15-20 hours while classes are not in session). The pay is $16.88 per hour or approximately $26,333 per year. This is an on-site position that requires your presence on campus.
Essential Functions:
- Oversees the implementation of policies, procedures and processes related to circulation and reserves. Ensures that library patrons and supervised staff and students comply with applicable library policies and procedures.
- Hires, trains, schedules and evaluates student workers (both assistants and student leads) for the circulation desk, interlibrary loan, and technical services.
- Ensures adequate circulation desk coverage during open hours.
- Handles customer service issues, questions, and special requests.
- Supports the events, activities, and initiatives of the Good Library.
- Maintains the library calendar; compiles yearly schedule in consultation with Library Director; notifies campus and building occupants of special library hours throughout the year; updates signage and web calendar accordingly.
- Oversees shelving maintenance, including training student shelvers and tracing lost materials.
- Orders and processes library materials, including books, videos/DVDs, serials, and supplies as directed by the Head of Technical Services, Systems, and Subscriptions.
- Assist in technical services tasks such as book repair, labeling, and deaccessioning.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Public/customer service experience
Skills and Competencies:
Required:
- Ability to both supervise and serve as a mentor to library student workers who can possess a wide range of work experience and work ethic.
- Sensitivity and discernment with the public, co-workers, and campus community; willingness to engage with co-workers on initiatives related to promotion of library services and materials.
- Flexibility in handling multiple priorities and frequent requests for assistance with only general supervision.
- Basic computer and tech skills using word processing software and spreadsheets.
Preferred:
- Working knowledge of library concepts, technology, and terminology.
- Experience with supervising undergraduate students or equivalent workers.
- Ability to speak Spanish
Special Requirements:
- Willingness to work in the evenings and weekends in exigent circumstances (1-2 times per year)
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift at least 25lbs (lifting boxes, pushing book carts, setting up tables, etc…)
- Ability to read smaller print (reading spine labels, variety of print fonts, computer screens, etc…)
- Moving inside the library and outside the building (using stairs, navigating wet or snowy surfaces, etc…)
Work Environment / Environmental Conditions:
- Mostly inside/office conditions
- Temperatures are usually moderate
- Artificial lighting
- Some exposure to dust and molds characteristic of a library environment and to chemicals typically used in office products
- Must use stairs or elevator to use toilet facilities
- Must be willing and able to correspond with library personnel (namely students) outside of normal office hours for emergency situations regarding the scheduling of students, building access, and the like
