Position Summary:

The General Maintenance Assistant Supervisor will assist the General Maintenance Supervisor in providing interior and exterior general maintenance to all buildings on the Goshen College campus. Common tasks include carpentry, door and window hardware repair, wall repair, painting, furniture repair/assembly and other tasks as assigned.

This is a full-time position that pays $18.75 to $19.75 per hour and is eligible for all benefits.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with general maintenance and minor construction renovations to college-owned buildings. This includes carpentry, light drywall and mudding, painting, door and window maintenance, roof care, and furnishing of classrooms and offices.
  • Assist with the key system, locks, and door hardware repairs for the entire campus.
  • Supervise summer student crew:
    • Help student crew learn the maintenance and renovation skills needed to fulfill their responsibilities.
    • Work alongside crew members at times and provide supervision of their work.
  • Assist with moving projects, such as office moves, building remodeling projects, and student housing changes.
  • Assist in creating a safe working environment.
    • Complete safety training
    • Be familiar with and anticipate safety hazards
  • Assist with maintaining a clean and organized workspace:
    • Keep the workspace clean
    • Provide organization for tools and materials

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Summer student worker supervision.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Some college training preferred.
  • Computer experience required.
  • 3-5 years of woodworking and/or general construction experience preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Forklift training

Skills & Competencies:

REQUIRED:

  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply oral and written instructions and labels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of hand tools and power equipment (saws, drills, hand sanders, measuring tape, screw drivers, etc.).
  • Ability to understand work assignments and be a creative problem solver.
  • Ability to lead a small group of students for projects.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to work varied shifts and irregular hours – including nights and weekends – during inclement weather and emergencies, or to cover for vacations.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods outdoors in all weather.
  • Ability to work with small objects.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, grasp, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work from ladders, on roofs, and manlifts.
  • Able to perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to drive campus vehicles (trucks, vans, utility carts, tractor, etc).
  • Ability to safely use respiratory and eye protection equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations and ability to work safely.

Work Environment/Environmental Condition:

  • Indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions
