Assistant Men's Soccer Coach

Position Summary:
The Assistant Coach for the Goshen College Men’s Soccer program (which includes both a 1st and 2nd team) will support the head coach in various areas, such as, but not limited to, designing, running, and/or monitoring training sessions, game preparation, along with game-day setup, and individual player development. Responsibilities include organizational abilities in assisting with the recruitment of new student-athletes, scouting and researching opponents, monitoring student-athletes’ academic status, and fostering an inclusive and positive team environment. The assistant coach will be involved with training sessions, matches, community service, and on-campus events that focus on meeting and exceeding individual and team standards. This position requires the ability to effectively communicate, demonstrate leadership in both self and others, and understand Goshen College’s commitment to both academic and athletic success.
Essential Functions:
- Assist the head coach in designing and implementing team training sessions.
- Assist the head coach in preparation for game day. (Scouting, tactics, film analysis).
- Assist the head coach during the game. (Player management, substitutions, tactical decisions).
- Assist the head coach with travel requirements, equipment, and other program-related logistics.
- Assist the head coach in the recruitment of new student-athletes.
- Work with individual players to help them achieve their personal goals within the framework of our team and program goals.
- Monitor the academic, health, and well-being of student-athletes. Build relationships and have check-ins.
- Work with athletes to help them adhere to our strength and conditioning programming, assisting them in achieving their fitness goals.
- Be knowledgeable of the institution, conference, and NAIA guidelines.
- Foster a sense of belonging and a positive team culture that resonates both on and off the pitch.
- Represent Goshen College and the soccer program in a positive light not only on the pitch, but on campus, at alumni events, in fundraising efforts, and in the community in general.
- Complete administrative and scheduling duties on a timely basis.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The assistant coach will be responsible for overseeing the management of the 2nd team, which may include providing feedback to other assistant coaches involved.
Education and Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree and collegiate playing experience would be preferred, but not mandatory.
- Education specific licensing in soccer and other high levels of play/coaching would be acceptable.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
Licensing courses with entities such as the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), United Soccer Coaches (old NSCAA), or their overseas counterparts would be preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
REQUIRED:
- In-depth knowledge of soccer tactics and techniques.
- Ability to develop players in a diverse environment.
- Be flexible and knowledgeable enough to either design and run training sessions alone or collaborate with others.
- Ability to identify talent and motivate effort.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written (email, WhatsApp, and so forth)
PREFERRED:
- Bilingual / Trilingual: Spanish and/or Portuguese.
- Experience in film analysis, telestration, and video editing.
- Knowledge of NAIA policies and guidelines.
Special Requirements:
- Some travel is required related to away games and recruiting events that may require an overnight stay.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to rent a vehicle may be required.
Physical Demands:
- Long hours of standing during the preseason. 2-3 sessions per day, 2 hours each session.
- Heavy lifting is not required, but goals will need to be moved (on wheels).
- Training session setup does require placing and picking up cones and soccer balls.
Work Environment/Environmental Condition:
The majority of our time, in-season, will be spent outside, much of our out-of-season training will take place indoors over the winter months.
