Job Description
The AmeriCorps Environmental Educator serves as a member of Merry Lea’s Environmental Education Outreach (EEO) team, helping design and deliver high-quality environmental education experiences for preschool and school-aged children, families, adults, and community members. Members work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and students to teach programs, prepare materials, support program logistics, and contribute to curriculum development and evaluation.
Members may also have an emphasis area that provides additional opportunities for leadership and professional growth.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework or degree in environmental science, education, natural resources, biology, or a related field preferred.
Interest in environmental education, conservation, outdoor learning, and connecting people with nature.
Experience working with children, youth, families, or community groups in educational, recreational, volunteer, or informal learning settings.
Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, students, and community members.
Willingness and ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and environments.
Ability to lead hands-on, experiential learning activities and engage diverse audiences.
Commitment to completing AmeriCorps service requirements, including required training, service hours, reporting, and community engagement activities.
Ability to successfully complete required background checks and meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications (optional):
Experience teaching or facilitating environmental education programs, camps, nature programs, or outdoor recreation activities.
Coursework or experience in ecology, conservation, natural history, early childhood education, elementary education, or related fields.
Experience developing educational materials, curriculum, or hands-on activities.
Experience working with preschool or school-aged children.
Knowledge of local ecosystems, native plants/animals, or conservation practices.
Experience with public speaking, presentations, or group facilitation.
